The 7 Best Pillows You Can Buy on Amazon, Tested by BHG

If you’ve ever woken up to a stiff neck after sleeping on a new pillow, you know how important finding a good one can be. Choosing a pillow that’s suited to your body and sleep style can make the difference between an uncomfortable and incredible night’s sleep.

“Body and head position dictates so much of how we sleep,” explains W. Christopher Winter, MD, a sleep specialist, neurologist, and author of The Sleep Solution. “The right pillow can minimize neck strain, reduce morning headaches, and the type of pillow can help keep you cool as well.”

To find the best pillows on Amazon, we tested several options in our testing lab. We also consulted Dr. Winter for additional insight on what to look for when shopping for a pillow.

What We Tested

To find the best pillows on Amazon, we tested a variety of options at home and in the lab, keeping in mind comfort, durability, quality, and value. For more information on how we tested pillows from Amazon, check out our testing process below.

Why You Should Get It

  • This memory foam pillow is durable, well-made, and very comfortable to sleep on.

Keep in Mind

  • Stomach sleepers may find this option too firm.

Casper is known for mattresses, but the Casper Foam Pillow makes a strong case for investing in the brand’s pillows, too. This memory foam pillow earned top scores across the board in testing. One of the first things we noticed is how luxurious and incredibly well-made it looks. We were happy to discover that it’s also wonderfully comfortable to sleep on as well.

The foam in this pillow retained its shape beautifully and delivered an ideal level of support for the head and neck. Though not adjustable like some of the other best pillows on Amazon, it’s something of a Goldilocks pillow when it comes to firmness: The medium firmness is just right both for people who like softer or denser pillows. It’s versatile and works particularly well for back and side sleepers.

The pillow itself isn’t washable, but the removable cover is. We cleaned the cover and it held up nicely, with minimal shrinkage, and was easy to slip back over the pillow. Casper doesn’t market this pillow as being cooling, but we thought it regulated temperature well. The fabric seemed to absorb some heat, but, likely thanks to the breathable 100% cotton cover, didn’t cause us to become overly warm.

Overall, we found this pillow to be a good value. If you’re looking for a perfect pillow with middle-of-the-road firmness that will hold up with time, this one is well worth the investment.

How It Performed After Six Months

After six months of regular use, this foam pillow kept its perfectly plush shape and didn’t flatten or become overly squishy. We used it every night and continued to find it supportive and soft. It’s just right for back or side sleepers. The only downside is it’s a little too firm for stomach sleepers; we noticed it contributed to some neck tightness if we used it in this position.

Key Terms to Know

  • Adjustable fill: It’s becoming popular for pillows to offer adjustable fill. This means the pillow includes a bag of extra fill you might choose to add to the pillow to make it firmer and loftier (or, remove some fill to reduce its height).
  • Shredded foam fill: Some pillows on this list are made with fill or memory foam that’s “shredded,” which means it’s in many small pieces as opposed to one.

Why You Should Get It

  • This latex foam pillow is springy and supportive, and holds its shape beautifully over time.

Keep in Mind

  • It has a slight latex smell at first.

We didn’t expect to like the Organic Textiles Natural Latex Pillow quite as much as we did. Made from natural latex with a 100% cotton cover, this pillow impressed us with its quality design and excellent durability.

This pillow has great “bounce,” meaning the foam quickly regains its shape after each use and doesn’t flatten over time. We tested it with a weighted medicine ball, and the latex foam regained its original shape immediately when we picked the ball up. You can tell this pillow is supportive and springy, and will likely hold its shape after long-term use.

Latex products often have a smell, and this one is no exception, but we found the scent to be subtle. After a few minutes, we no longer noticed it.

This pillow is also reasonably cooling and lived up to its claims of being temperature-regulating. The material warmed up slightly around our head, but still remained fairly breathable and didn’t cause us to overheat. It feels high-quality overall, and slides easily into the pillowcase.

This pillow isn’t adjustable, so note that you can’t customize the firmness level. We found it to be springy and supportive, and perhaps best suited for stomach sleepers.

How It Performed After Six Months

This latex pillow hasn’t changed at all after six months of nightly use. The firmness remains the same, it hasn’t flattened whatsoever, and the overall quality is consistent. We appreciate how the foam “bounces” back so you can sink into it every time, but it still supports your head and neck fully. Though a little on the pricey side, we think this pillow is well worth the splurge for a high-quality pillow that lasts.

Why You Should Get It

  • It’s easy to customize this adjustable pillow to your perfect firmness level, and it’s also nice and cooling.

Keep in Mind

  • The chopped feeling of the fill may not be comfortable for everyone.

When we first started testing the Sijo FlexCool Shredded Memory Foam Pillow, we wondered if it was too thick and fluffy. But after sleeping on this pillow for a few nights, we were won over. It’s soft, comfortable, and delivers excellent support.

This Sijo pillow is filled with shredded memory foam, and like a few of the other options on this list, you can customize the loft by adding or removing some of the fill. Your purchase includes an extra bag of shredded foam that you can use to boost or reduce the height of the pillow by simply unzipping two layers. The zipper glides well, and we were impressed by the overall quality and ease of adjustability.

Sijo markets this pillow as being cooling, thanks to the cooling fabric on its outer shell, and we found it to live up to that claim — we never felt overly warm while sleeping on it. It’s also impressively easy to clean. We were able to wash a chocolate stain off of the removable protective cover, and the stain came out completely with some detergent and water.

Worth mentioning: The filling in this pillow is “chopped,” and we initially noted that it felt somewhat lumpy. After using it for a few nights, though, we got used to the feeling. This type of fill might not be right for everyone, though — if you prefer a perfectly smooth pillow, a regular memory foam option might be a better fit.

How It Performed After Six Months

Six months in, this pillow continued to impress. Over time, we opted to remove more of the fill so that the pillow could mold more fully around our head and neck; this extra customization seemed to help alleviate neck pain with continued use.

The quality of this pillow also remained consistent, with no visible signs of wear and tear. We also appreciated how easy it was to adjust, so you can continue making changes to the support as often as you need.

Why You Should Get It

  • This adjustable pillow is soft but still extremely supportive.

Keep in Mind

  • The design on the outer shell can show through some pillowcases.

If you’re a back sleeper who craves support but still appreciates the feeling of a soft, plush pillow, let us introduce you to the Coop Sleep Goods The Original Pillow. Made from cross-cut memory foam that can be adjusted, this pillow forms beautifully to your head and neck and delivers a comfortable, supportive night’s sleep.

After testing this pillow, it quickly replaced the one we were previously using. The memory foam is soft and lovely to snuggle up on, and it’s very easy to adjust. The pillow comes with a bag of extra shredded foam, and we could easily change the firmness level to our preferences. (It actually arrived a little too full, so we found it most comfortable to remove some.)

We loved how supportive the memory foam was on this pillow, and its design makes it ideal for back sleepers. The retailer doesn’t market this as being a cooling pillow, but we found it to be very breathable and cool to the touch, and we never woke up feeling too hot while using it.

The only feature we disliked about this pillow was the pattern on the outer shell, which is a stitched tile. Frustratingly, it shows through white pillowcases.

Why You Should Get It

  • Thin but substantial and well-made, this is a nice pillow for stomach or side sleepers.

Keep in Mind

  • It’s not as lofty as some other options.

As its name suggests, the Bluewave Bedding Ultra Slim Gel Memory Foam Pillow is on the thinner side — so if you prefer an ultra lofty, plush pillow, this may not be the best choice for you. But the slimmer design makes this pillow a perfect fit for stomach sleepers, who are prone to neck pain if they sleep on too high of a pillow.

Though thin, this Bluewave pillow still delivers a nice amount of neck support. We were able to comfortably shift positions throughout the night without experiencing any discomfort.

The pillow feels somewhat firm when you first apply pressure to it, but it does a wonderful job of distributing your weight evenly and gently cushioning your head. The material is also thick enough to deliver proper neck and spine alignment if you sleep on your side.

We liked that this pillow didn’t show any signs of becoming lumpy or flattening. The memory foam feels well-made and substantial, and we expect it will hold up well over time. Given how comfortable it is to sleep on and how high-quality it feels, we think the price of this pillow is well worth it and represents good value.

The retailer claims that this pillow is infused with gel to absorb heat. We felt comfortable while sleeping on this pillow, but we didn’t find it to be particularly cooling. We did use it with a thick pillowcase, which may have somewhat blocked the cooling effects.

How It Performed After Six Months

We continued to sleep with this pillow every night after the initial testing period ended. The foam remained plush and comfortable, and we didn’t experience any pain or tightness. This pillow also kept its shape nicely, and we didn’t notice any flattening or molding with time. Overall, it continued to improve our sleep quality.

Product Details: Shell Material: Polyester microfiber | Fill Type: Slim gel memory foam | Sizes: Standard, queen, king | Available on Amazon Prime: Yes

Why You Should Get It

  • This pillow is easy to customize and works well for side sleepers.

Keep in Mind

  • Adjusting it to the right firmness for you may take some trial and error.

If it’s your first time using an adjustable pillow, you may find that it takes some time to adjust the fill to your perfect comfort level — and that’s no exception with this Coop Home Goods Crescent Pillow. It took a few nights for us to figure out the right level of firmness, but once we did, it was wonderfully comfortable to sleep on.

This pillow has a uniquely curved shape, which is meant to provide extra support for your shoulders and back. And we did find that the crescent design supported our neck, head, and shoulders very well.

The memory foam feels full and firm but still nicely soft. We found it works for different sleep positions, but the extra shoulder support means it’s particularly well-suited for side sleepers. If you’re someone who wants to be able to customize their pillow to the perfect firmness, this one is a good choice.

Speaking of adjusting the fill, we found it to be an easy process. The pillow comes with a bag of extra shredded foam, and you simply open two zippers to add (or remove, if it’s too lofty) some of the fill. The outer layer, made of microfiber, is knitted and soft, and we were able to remove and clean the cover when it became stained. It didn’t shrink and continued to look like new.

As mentioned, there is an adjustment period when using this crescent pillow. We also noticed that we occasionally had to flip the pillow in the night because the fill shifted to the top, though this may have had to do with the fact that we had removed some. This also isn’t a cooling pillow, so if you’re a hot sleeper, this may not be the best pillow on Amazon for you.

How It Performed After 6 Months

Though it was initially very comfortable and continued to look and feel high-quality, we did develop some neck pain after using this pillow consistently. The neck pain was particularly noticeable after sleeping on our stomach. However, this pillow may continue to work well for side sleepers, since the curved design offers that extra shoulder support.
