How many Minecraft mobs are there? Mobs are the creatures that can be found around Minecraft, be they hostile or friendly, and there are now over 80 unique mobs in the sandbox game.
If that's not enough for you, even more can be added with some of the best Minecraft mods, but we're purely talking about the vanilla base game here. With that in mind, we've listed every single mob in the survival game, where they can be found, and whether they're passive, hostile, or neutral. You can also read more about mob variants in Minecraft and catch up on the newest arrivals to the overworld.
New mobs are always added to Minecraft, but since the annual mob vote ended, we get what Mojang wants to add and when.
In the 1.21.6 update, perhaps one of the greatest new mobs we've ever seen arrived in the Overworld, but only if you go and collect it from The Nether first. Endearing new Dried Ghasts can be found wallowing in the warmth of the hellscape, but bring them overground and smother them in water and they'll soon be as happy as, well, a Happy Ghast!
What are passive, neutral, and hostile mobs?
There are three types of Minecraft mob: passive, neutral, and hostile. Passive mobs never attack the player, and many even run away when attacked. Hostile mobs, meanwhile, will attack without provocation.
Neutral mobs are those that don't attack unless provoked. For example, if a player hits a wild wolf, it will attack. Similarly, llamas spit when they or their wandering trader is attacked, and Iron Golems protect their villagers, attacking anyone who hits one.
Many passive mobs can be tamed and bred, and we've got separate guides on many of the mobs below that detail these mechanics and more. Simply click on any of the links below to get more detailed information on that Minecraft mob.
Mob variants
For some of the mobs listed below, there are a few different variants to find if you want a complete collection in your farm.
There have been sheep variants for a long time, since they can spawn with different colored wool. In fact, the rare pink sheep has been around since the game's earliest days, and even the color-changing Jeb sheep arrived in 1.7.4. More recently, cows, pigs, and chickens were all given biome variants in the 1.21.5 Spring to Life update of 2025.
Here are all the Minecraft mobs that have variants:
