New Borderlands 4 feature will let you mute the series' most annoying character

However you feel about Claptrap, it's undeniable that he's the heart of Borderlands. Yes, every game has a masked bandit on the cover, but the loudmouthed robot is the perfect encapsulation of the series as a whole: sometimes annoying, sometimes very funny, and bound to provoke a mixed reactions from every player. Claptrap is also back in Borderlands 4, but this time Gearbox is introducing a new feature so you can shut him up.

In Borderlands 4, Claptrap is going to have his very own volume slider - depending on your disposition, you can completely silence the garrulous steward bot, or, if you hate life, make him the only sound you'll hear for the entire game. If speedrunners don't have a Claptrap only Any% planned for the Borderlands 4 release date, I'm going to be sorely disappointed in one of the best co-op games around.

According to the game's narrative director Sam Winkler, the Claptrap voice feature even has some unique dialogue. "I wrote some lines just for this feature and it includes maybe the dumbest, most niche reference to a certain terrible accent in a certain classic immersive sim."

Whatever that reference is (bad accents? Immersive sims? Surely it's Deus Ex) the first thing I'm doing on day one is muting Claptrap completely, just to see how Borderlands 4 plays without his constant quips.

Shutting Claptrap up isn't the only innovation Gearbox has planned for Borderlands 4. The game's skill trees eclipse both BL2 and 3's combined. This means you'll have the largest amount of build variety across the series yet, which will make replaying BL4 as each of the Vault Hunters a total breeze.
