God Gives Us Everlasting Love - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - July 1, 2025
“… I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” Jeremiah 31:3 (NIV)
My mom traced her fingers over the back of a polished mahogany rocking chair. “Why don’t you take it for Honor’s nursery?” she said pensively. “Take anything else you want to.”
All of my mom’s worldly possessions had to be cleared out quickly before her upcoming move to a smaller place as she aged. Now, I would rock my own baby daughter in the chair my mom once rocked me in. Our roles as mothers and daughters had changed, but one thing remained the same: our place in God’s family. No matter what age we were, we could count on God’s everlasting love for us.
There are many things in life that change as we grow older. Our bodies grow, then age. Our roles change – from child to parent, from student to worker, and more. Our friendships come and go, and even our homes might change many times. Life is full of seasons, some joyful and some painful. But through every season, there is one thing that never changes: God’s love for us.
In Jeremiah 31:3, God says: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” These words were spoken to the people of Israel during a time of exile and hardship. They had made many mistakes and were suffering the consequences. Yet even then, God reminded them of his unchanging love.
God’s love is not like human love. Human love can be temporary or based on conditions. People may love us when we do well, but pull away when we fail. But God’s love isn’t based on our age, our success, our mistakes, or any other condition. God loves us unconditionally, completely, and forever! Before we were born, God loved us. As we live each day, God continues to love us. Even when we’re old and nearing the end of our earthly lives, our Heavenly Father still holds us close.
As children, we may come to God with simple prayers and childlike trust. In our teenage years or young adulthood, we may struggle to find our place and feel unsure of ourselves. In middle age, responsibilities and worries may press in on us. And in our later years, we may feel lonely, forgotten, or tired. But in every stage, God is with us. God doesn’t withdraw his love when we change. God never gets tired of us. He continues to love us faithfully.
God says he draws us with unfailing kindness. That means he’s always reaching out to us, not with harshness or anger, but with gentle mercy. Maybe there have been times when we wandered far from God. Maybe we’ve doubted him or felt distant. Still, God keeps drawing us back with kindness. God’s love is not just a feeling; it’s an action. God is always working to bring us closer to him because he enjoys being close to us.
Sometimes we think we have to earn God’s love. We may feel like we have to pray more, do more, be better. But God already loves us. Yes, God wants us to grow and live holy lives – but not so that he’ll love us. God already loves us. Everything God asks us to do comes from a place of love, not pressure.
This everlasting love also gives us strength to face changes and losses. As we age, we may grieve the loss of loved ones, our health, or things that once brought us comfort. In those times, we can rest in the promise that we are never truly alone. God’s love is like a warm blanket wrapped around us, constant and sure. God’s presence doesn’t ever fade. We can always enjoy God’s presence with us and experience his affection for us.
Even when our memory fades or our strength weakens, God remembers us. He holds us closely and sings over us with love. One day, God will welcome us into heaven, where we’ll experience his love face-to-face forever.
No matter what your age or stage in life is right now, God loves you. You can always rely on God’s love to be there for you. It’s everlasting!
Let’s pray:
Dear God, thank you for loving me with an everlasting love. Please help me to rest in your love in every season of my life. When I feel forgotten, remind me that you never leave me. When I feel unworthy, remind me that you chose me. Let your everlasting love give me hope through all the changes I face throughout my life. Thank you, God. I love you. Amen.
