Ready or Not has had a weird time of it. The tac shooter's console launch should've been a moment for celebration, though it's been muddied and mired in controversy after developer Void Interactive removed and reworked some extreme material to pass certification. Despite the massive backlash on Steam, RoN's console launch has already been a huge success, rocketing past its first major sale milestone just days after dropping.

Ready or Not's console port has gotten off to the races, racking up over a million sales less than a week after launch. Void CEO Julio Rodriguez notes in a press release that, whereas one of the best FPS games took 36 days for the PC version to reach the magic million, the console version has slashed that time by 90% to just 3.6 days, no doubt due to the game's growing reputation over the years, plus the lack of decent tactical shooters on console.

In that same presser, Void creative director and COO Stirling Rank says the launch's success has "completely blown" the studio away. "Going from the days of excitement from our early access trailer blowing up on PC to seeing the community grow globally so much across platforms is humbling, but a testament to the incredible dedication of the entire Void Interactive team to make this vision a reality for Ready or Not."

As I mentioned, it's not been plain sailing for the shooter. At the end of June, Void announced that a slew of visual changes were being made to the game to get the console launch over the line. These included "tuned down" depictions of torture, some explicit nudity being "covered up a bit more," and changes to gore. This went down about as well as a cup of cold sick with players, who gave the Steam review section a good bludgeoning in protest. The 'Most Recent' section currently sits at 'Mostly Negative.'

Despite this, RoN has gone from strength to strength. Its 38,136-strong 24-hour peak is, according to SteamDB, the highest it's reached since its full 1.0 release in December 2023. Its latest major update, Stories of Los Sueños, has brought with it two new playable missions, as well as a major difficulty overhaul. You can, of course, turn to the best Ready or Not mods for more bespoke settings, but the hardcore SWAT sim's reworked options are already more than enough for me to be getting on with mastering.
