Far Far West is Steam's latest indie success story, racking up 250,000 sales and a 97% rating in just two days
2026 has been a year of great indie game success stories, and Far Far West is the latest to leap onto that list. French studio Evil Raptor's creation injects the dusty Old West of Red Dead Redemption with a fantasy twist, the extraction-style co-op of Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic, giant raid bosses reminiscent of Destiny 2 and Risk of Rain 2, and the stylish action of Roboquest and Gunfire Reborn. The result is a barnstorming Wild West shooter that's already sold a quarter of a million copies in its first 48 hours, and racked up a very impressive 97% Steam review average so far, earning it Valve's 'overwhelmingly positive' rating.
Far Far West puts you in the boots of a squad of robot cowboys, tasked with all manner of contracts by the local Sheriff. It's very much a fantastical spin on the Wild West - venture out of the comfort of its saloons and you'll soon find yourself delving into skeleton-ridden mines, braving heavy storms, and peering through the fog for the telltale signs of a giant ghost train. While you can go in alone, Far Far West shines most as a co-op game, with the ability to gather in groups of up to four players to ensure you can actually stay alive long enough to bring in your bounties.
The arsenal at your disposal ranges from classic cowboy favorites such as six-shooters and Winchester repeaters to heavy-duty miniguns, lightning revolvers, and throwable options like tomahawks and dynamite. It's the spell system that really kicks things into high gear, however, with powerful elemental interactions that remind me of the glory days of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. There are a wide range of base abilities spread across several core elements, and you can quickly switch out your weapon's primary fire type as well to complement them.

The number of potential combinations and interactions here is already pretty staggering. Set an enemy alight with a fireball, or shock them with an electric revolver, and then use the acid thrower on them for a constant stream of detonations. Use the drain effect on an enemy in close proximity to one of your cactus mines, and it'll turn them into a temporary ally that fights alongside you. Or drop a cactus turret, hit it with lightning to create a wide, damaging field, then cast your drain spell upon the zone to summon healing candles and swing the entire battlefield in your favor.
Add on plenty of customizable loadout and perk options between missions, and you've got all the elements needed for a satisfying co-op extraction experience. The results are plain to see: Far Far West has sold 250,000 copies in its first couple of days, and 97% of the more than 8,000 players who've dropped a review recommend it. It even made it to number two on Valve's top sellers chart, landing just behind Counter-Strike 2. If you want to join in on the action, there are still a few days left on its launch discount.
Far Far West is out now on Steam in Early Access, with a 10% launch discount available until Tuesday May 5, meaning you'll pay just $17.99 / £14.39 while the sale lasts, or $19.99 / £15.99 afterwards. Grab it here to start your robot cowboy adventure.
Evil Raptor and Fireshine Games say the current plan is for the early access period to last for roughly one year. On the list for the future is "more content, replayability systems, long-term progression, enemies, game modes, cosmetics, and weapons." It says that once these have been introduced, it intends to increase the price for the 1.0 launch, so now's a great time to get in if you like what you see.
