Subnautica 2 early access launch date finally confirmed, and it's just weeks away
Subnautica 2 has had one of the weirdest development cycles in recent memory, mainly thanks to all the legal drama between publisher Krafton and developer Unknown Worlds. For a time, I didn't think the sci-fi survival game sequel wouldn't make it. Now, a fresh trailer has dropped, confirming that Subnautica 2 will enter early access in two-weeks-time. Pinch me, I'm dreaming.
The Subnautica 2 cinematic teaser absolutely passes the vibe check. Here we see a team of scuba'd-up explorers searching the ocean for resources and treasures. It's all very lovely until a peeved-off local begins picking them off one-by-one. The lone survivor, realizing his quandary, books it to what looks to be a new iteration of the Seamoth, hightailing it out of there while avoiding various deep-sea horrors. It looks absolutely stunning, and I can't believe that, four years on from its original announcement, the Subnautica 2 release date is finally upon us.
As noted, it's been quite the journey. Last year, Unknown Worlds CEO Ted Gill, alongside other senior devs, were removed from the studio, with Krafton claiming that they had acted dishonestly and abandoned responsibilities that left the game unfit for launch. The devs sued, arguing that Krafton had essentially strong-armed them out, purposefully delaying Subnautica 2's release to avoid paying the studio a hefty $250 million sales target bonus the game was likely to meet. Studio co-founder Charlie Cleveland said at the time that the game was "ready for early access."

After plenty of back-and-forth in court between Krafton and those fired, a judge last month ordered the publisher to reinstate Gill, while extending the deadline for the bonus metrics to be met. From the court statement published, the judge was clearly not happy with how Krafton had conducted itself. Indeed, it's been a messy litigation, with plenty of public statements from both sides. Subnautica 2 could've easily become collateral damage, but, thankfully, it's now coming to our screens.
Subnautica 2 enters early access on Thursday, May 14, 2026 - exactly two weeks from now. So prepare your scuba gear, stock up on snacks, and pray that you don't run into a leviathan when the time comes to dive in.
