A Prayer to Accept Yourself as You Are
By Vivian Bricker

Bible Reading:
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

Listen or Read Below:

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was a children's television series that focused on helping kids learn about the world, share their emotions, and build friendships. A few of the classical characters include Mister Rogers, Mr. McFeely, King Friday XIII, Queen Sara, Prince Tuesday, Daniel Tiger, X the Owl, Lady Elaine, and Trolley.

Through the Land of Make Believe and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, kids and adults alike were taught challenging lessons in fun ways. For example, Mister Rogers often taught the importance of accepting yourself as you are. One of his well-known quotes is, “I like you just the way you are.” For many children, they had never heard that sentiment before.

Many kids are encouraged to be less like themselves and more like someone else. Mister Rogers’ teaching went against the grain because he helped kids know that they could simply exist as they are—they didn't need to change. People should like you for who you are, not how smart you are, what you look like, or what you can do.

As adults, we are not often reminded of this truth. We struggle with the idea that we need to be more successful, wealthier, or smarter in order to be worthy. Whenever we are in this cycle, we need to remind ourselves that it is okay to just be us. We don't have to be the best at something, the smartest person, or the most skilled individual to be loved by God or by others.

This is supported in the Bible as Paul tells us, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). The Greek term, poiēma, is translated as “handiwork” in the New International Version; however, in other translations, poiēma is translated as “artwork” or “workmanship.” Regardless of the Bible translation you are using, the same truth reigns: we are God’s masterpiece.

In Ephesians 2:10, Paul also teaches that God created us to do good works and planned them in advance. This means that we don't need to try to be someone we are not or copy someone else. God’s plans for our lives are unique to us. This is in agreement with Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

God has unique good works for you to do throughout your life. Step out in confidence, knowing that the Lord is guiding your steps. Faithfully follow Him, honor Him, and trust Him with your life. Study what He says about you in the Bible and find comfort in knowing you are beloved, worthy, and accepted just as you are (Jeremiah 31:3).

Let's Pray:

Dear God, it has been challenging for me to accept myself as I am. I have often desired to be like someone else—someone who is smarter, prettier, or wiser than me. I know You don't want me to think like this, but it can be tremendously difficult at times. Help me to know that I am accepted just as I am by You, God. Guide my heart to the comfort and knowledge that I'm beloved, cherished, and worthy in Your eyes. Although I will wander at times, lead my heart back to You.

I also ask that You help me to take hold of the truth that I am Your handiwork. This is a true compliment and blessing. You have prepared good works for me to do, and only I can do these works. This helps me to know that I am unique and special in Your eyes. There is only one me in the world, and You created me with an especially important purpose: to do the good works You prepared for me long ago. Thank You for believing in me, God, even when I have doubted myself. All praise and glory belong to You, God.

In Your Son’s Name, I pray, Amen.

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that has nothing to do with how much sleep you got last night. It's the weariness that settles into your soul when you've been going hard for a long time — when prayer feels hollow, worship feels distant, and you find yourself sitting in church thinking about everything except what's being said.
