FF14 Evercold will "unite the stars" in January - here's everything Yoshi-P said in his massive Fanfest keynote

FF14 Evercold is the name, and it's time to "unite the stars into one." In his opening Final Fantasy 14 Fanfest keynote, game director Naoki Yoshida gave us our first look at the future of the critically acclaimed MMORPG. That includes a full rundown of where the Scions of the Seventh Dawn are going next, along with a bunch of new features and overhauls for core systems. I'm coming to you live from the show floor with a complete Fanfest keynote summary of everything he had to say.

We've been eagerly awaiting word on what the future looks like for Final Fantasy 14, and now we know. FF14 8.0 is called Evercold, and it launches in January 2027. 'Yoshi-P' is joined on stage in the Anaheim Convention Center by Michael Christopher Koji-Fox for English translations. Yoshida starts by revealing that we're now entering "The Godless Realms Saga," and promises that Evercold will be "taking Final Fantasy 14 to the next level."

With the Hydaelyn and Zodiark saga finished, it's time to start our second saga, and we'll be visiting the reflections of the Source. First on the list is the Fourth, a reflection slowly succumbing to spreading ice. "How, and with who, will you be making your journey? And who is this Wanderer?" You can get a good impression with the stunning reveal trailer, which you can watch below.

"All the Fourth is a stage…" Yoshida is reluctant to reveal too much too early, so we don't get any place names today, but we do get a selection of screenshots of some of the lands we'll be visiting. He points out a giant structure, forged of intertwined crystals. There's also a building with a giant dragon head sculpted in gold and white, and Yoshida says the team has been working to create things that feel "fresh and new" from what we've seen before.

"You might have noticed that some of those screenshots are decidedly un-icy," Yoshida notes. indeed, one piece of concept art shows a city seemingly surrounded with red crystals and lava. "It seems rather hot." We see more artwork of that dragon-like figure: "Is it a dragon? Is it a snake?" Notably, there are a lot of towering structures and spires, with plenty of protruding crystals - the land might be slightly flatter, but there are some real high-rise buildings. There are also some gorgeous markets built in the shade of towering flowers.

"Of course, the Fourth is not a world without danger, and this time, that danger is going to be massive. What in the world could this strange creature be?" He shows a colossal, titanic beast. There will be several of these arcane giants roaming the ice, and Yoshida muses on whether they'll be friend or foe. Looking decidedly more friendly is a fluffy cat-like creature that stands on two legs, wearing a set of overalls.

Now it's time for the details, and Yoshida's promise of "an ever-evolving FF14." He remarks that, while there is comfort in something that rarely changes with time, that lack of change can result in a feeling of fatigue, and he's eager to fight back against that. "I get it - it's been 13 years, that's a lot of Allagan Tomestones." While he attributes that consistency to it's long-term success, but says, "We're going to go in a different direction for 8.0. In order to avoid the inevitable, FF14 has to grow and evolve."

That evolution starts with FF14 8.0 and Evercold. Yoshida says the developers "must also become explorers" in order to elevate the game to the next level. At its center is what the team is calling the "Adventurer Activity" screen. This marks a deliberate switch "from a daily-based system to a weekly-based system." Rather than feeling forced to jump on and get your daily roulette rewards as efficiently as possible to cap your Tomes, Yoshida wants to "better fit the lifestyles" of the broad player base.

Yoshida is keen to stress that everything being shown today is "very much in development" and will likely change by the time we get to play Evercold in January 2027. Some of the missions in your list will be one-time completions (such as the MSQ progression), but others will be repeatable, with the goal of offering more freedom and "getting you to do what you want to do." In fact, the team is currently even considering the ability to earn your missed Tomestones and such from the week prior if you didn't get time to do them.

He promises new ways to raise your item level. One of the additional factors at play here is the introduction of seasons, which you can think of as an even and odd patch pairing from the current model. Yoshida is quick to stress that this doesn't mean the typical 'seasonal' trappings that the term might bring to mind. "Will you have to buy a season pass? Absolutely not." It's more a consideration of structure, where typically you can think of the way patches traditionally alternate between two 'bundles' of activities (raids one patch, alliance raids the next, for example).

At the forefront of the new system is your Warrior of Light. "With Evercold and the subsequent patches, we want to make sure that your character is as unique as possible." In 8.0, jobs will still exist as they do now, and you'll continue to level them separately, but you can reflect your highest item level across your whole armoury. There will still be reasons to min-max, such as getting the perfect materia for high-end content, but it'll be much easier to jump into activities with a class that isn't your main.

FF14 Evercold - character creation upgrade.

Character creation is being expanded with new options to take full advantage of the Dawntrail graphics update. These include a color picker for eye, hair, and skin tone, face paint layers, eye shadow, and further eye and lip customization. Yes, you can look forward to some Arcadion-style neon hair. We're also getting 'character action skins,' with specific actions that will let you customize your WoL to show off. More details on this at Fanfest Berlin; Yoshida says the team wasn't quite able to get it ready to show.

Another very welcome inclusion is the ability to toggle on or off certain specific elements of your armor pieces. This could involve hiding a scarf, backpack, or the shoulders of a chestplate or dress. While all of this is coming in 8.0, Yoshida promises that the team intends to continue upgrading character creation in future patches.

The changes don't stop there. Public field content is getting the love it's long needed, as is questing. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait for Fanfest Berlin for the full details on what this looks like. A third difficulty level is coming for eight-player raids: "Not above, but between normal and savage." Yoshida hopes that this will help people to make the gradual step up, but also reassures the hardcore audience that the Ultimate raid is on its way in 7.5 to keep them busy (more on that shortly). Progression routes for alliance raids are being overhauled, and there's even the promise of "all-new types of battle content." More details at the upcoming Fanfests.

"After 13 long years, we're finally introducing same-region player matching." This goes across all Worlds in a given region, going across data centers. It also includes the party finder, finally freeing raiders from being forced onto specific DCs in search of consistent groups, which Yoshida apologizes for. In even better news, we're getting this one early - the first stress tests will be taking place at some time in the patch 7.5x cycle, with the first one in Japan.

FF14 Evercold - Evolving battle systems.

"Okay, we're finally finished," Yoshida says, teasingly. "Or are we? It turns out I still have a lot to tell you." FF14 Evercold will continue the long-held tradition of two new jobs: A tank and a melee DPS. Both of these are FF14 originals, and you can take a look at Yoshida's t-shirt below if you want to try and guess what they might be.

Evercold is also introducing an entirely new job system, with the introduction of 'Reborn' and 'Evolved' modes (note that these won't apply to the two limited jobs, Blue Mage and Beastmaster). Reborn mode is about "keeping it familiar," sticking to the traditional rotations that players are already very familiar with. Evolved mode is "emphasizing individuality" with different rotations. It'll use fewer inputs, but Yoshi-P is quick to note that this shouldn't be considered an easier option.

FF14 Evercold new jobs - Yoshida's t-shirt.

For example, Reborn Dragoon and Evolved Dragoon have different actions and rotations, so they can almost be thought of as two similar but different jobs. You can switch between the two at any time outside of battle, and core factors like your job level and gear will be shared across both. Yoshida also promises that you will be able to complete all content with both modes.

The one big distinction is when it comes to the two new jobs, which will only offer Evolved mode. Yoshida thinks that the new forms might be "just a little bit stronger," but hopes balance should remain close. If you want to see the new-look jobs in action, be sure to tune into the Fanfest dev panel later today for an early glimpse of them in action.

FF14 - Reborn and Evolved modes.

"We still have more to go." FF14 Evercold will see a level cap increase up to 110, despite the internal considerations about whether this was the way to go. You can also expect updates for Treasure Hunts, FATEs, and The Hunt; Yoshida acknowledges that, like much of the rest of the game, these have felt a little stale, and will see some evolutions. Naturally, we can also look forward to new dungeons, approximately the same number as standard, and a wealth of new gear and crafting recipes.

"With a new expansion comes new enemies," Yoshida continues. "We can only show you a little bit. A lot of these are directly linked to the main scenario, so showing too much would be spoilers." Other fundamentals are present and correct. Evercold will feature a new eight-player raid series, to be revealed in Berlin, PvP updates, the ability to take on Duty Support dungeons with more than one person, and ultimate raids.

FF14 Evercold - new enemy types.

The new alliance raid is another crossover, and this time it's with Evangelion - it's called 'Ghosts of Desire.' "Many of you already know that I am a massive Evangelion otaku," Yoshida laughs. It's being built in collaboration with its creators as a celebration of its 30th anniversary.

There won't be significant changes to the system requirements for Evercold. Yoshida does however warn that, while FF14 will still continue to run as normal on PS4, he warns that the team might start running into issues by "about 8.3" due to the ways it's crunching through the data limits. "If you're still playing on PlayStation 4, you have two years to save up for a PlayStation 5." Or a PC, if you prefer. The game is also coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, although it'll require a separate subscription exclusively for that version.

FF14 patch 7.51 - Kefka in Dancing Mad (Ultimate)

Yoshi-P confirms that Beastmaster will be launching in patch 7.56, and then turns his attention to the upcoming ultimate raid. It's called Dancing Mad (Ultimate) and launches with patch 7.51, and as previously teased, it's fronted by iconic FF6 villain Kefka. Yoshida promises that he'll be "very chatty" during the fight, and notes that the team worked alongside Kefka's original designer to bring him to life.

To end. there's one final big piece of news: with patch 7.5, the FF14 free trial will be expanded to include Shadowbringers. Now you can experience what's frequently hailed as FF14's greatest expansion without paying a single thing. As a reminder, patch 7.5 launches on April 28, followed by 7.51 on June 2, 7.55 on July 28, and finally 7.56 on September 8.

Final Fantasy 14 Evercold will release in January 2027. That's all for today's keynote. I'll be bringing you more details from FF14 Fanfest NA in Anaheim over the course of the weekend, including Q&A sessions with Yoshi-P himself, so keep your eyes right here.
