Largely regarded as heavy metal's founding fathers, the original four members (Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward) achieved one of the greatest studio hot streaks in history with the release of those hallowed first six records.

Excess began to take its toll on the group in the late '70s, leading to subpar recordings, a waning identity and problems with Osbourne, who was eventually fired and replaced by Ronnie James Dio.

While Osbourne returned to the band in 1997, Sabbath tried their hand at recording new material, but only managed a couple songs rather than a complete album. It wasn't until 2013's 13 that the Prince of Darkness was back at the vocal helm on another Sabbath LP. Notably, Ward did not play on the album and their have been lingering tensions between him and the Black Sabbath camp over the years. Ward was also absent for Black Sabbath's farewell tour in 2017.

Fortunately, Sabbath will close the book for good the right way — with all four classic members back onstage together. The reunion will take place on July 5 as part of Ozzy's last-ever live performance, which is set to feature a remarkable list of special guests.
