If you're a dedicated coffee lover, it's not a question of "Do I need a coffee machine?" Rather, it's a question of, “Which coffee machine do I need?” Yes, all you serious coffee lovers seriously love coffee. This much we know. But if you buy the right coffee machine, one that delivers all your coffee needs, you’ll fall in love with that too.

That being said, it’s not easy choosing a coffee machine. Coffee drinking is more than a pastime. It’s a whole subculture of specific tastes. Give it a quick google. The number of websites dedicated to coffee drinking will make your eyes spin like a triple shot of espresso. There’s so much to get your head around before you can make an informed decision. That’s why we’re here to help with some coffee-based information.

So which coffee machine is right for you? It's the ultimate question of taste.

What types of coffee do coffee machines make?

Between various styles and functions, coffee machines make pretty much any coffee you want — espresso, cappuccino, americano, lungo, latte, or straight-up black. The trick is choosing a machine that makes coffee exactly as you like it.

What are the different types of coffee machine?

Whatever your taste or lifestyle, there’s a coffee machine for you:

  • Pod/capsule machines — These automatic coffee makers deliver espresso, lungo, or ristretto the push of a button. They use pods, which are packed with perfectly measured ground coffee beans. Just stick the pod in the machine. These machines are also compact and affordable. Buying pods means ongoing costs but there's a huge selection of flavours, blends, and strengths.

  • Bean-to-cup machines — For those who like their coffee to feel a bit more authentic, the bean-to-cup machine is like having your own barista in the kitchen. Pop your beans in the grinder and adjust your settings. It works by blasting the beans with hot water to make a perfect cup of coffee. These are often bigger, more expensive models.

  • Semi-automatic machines —The semi-automatic is somewhere between the above models. It gives you some control over the coffee-making process. It’s up to you to grind the coffee, load it up, and tamp. But once you press the button, it takes care of the pressure and temperature. You may also have some control over the water flow.

Keep these machines in mind when shopping, and you should be able to navigate your way to something that works for you.

What is bar pressure?

It’s worth learning the jargon, or you’ll soon get blinded for coffee-based science. A bar is a metric unit of pressure — a way to measure the amount of pressure you put on coffee beans. The higher the pressure, the faster the coffee is extracted. Serious bean-heads (AKA coffee experts) will tell you that 9 bars is the optimum pressure for espresso, for instance. Though some machines go all the way up to 19.

What is a milk frother?

This is a little bonus contraption that froths up milk in just a few seconds, which you can add to your coffee for that more authentic coffee shop taste. It can be added to all types of coffee, from espresso and lungo to cappuccino and americano. Check whether your new coffee machine comes with a milk frother or not. You may need to buy one separately. Some machines come with a more traditional steam wand instead. You just add milk to a separate jug and then use the steam to froth up your milk.

What is the best coffee machine?

We’ll leave that question up to you and your tastebuds. As well as you deciding which machine suits your kitchen and lifestyle. Because that matters too. What we’ve done is grind our way through the internet and filter out the very best options for you to consider.

These are the best coffee machines in 2025.

Nespresso Vertuo Next coffee machine

The Good & The Bad

  • Popular coffee brand
  • Stylish design
  • Heats up quickly
  • Drink options
  • Lots of flavours
  • Milk frother costs extra
  • Vertuo pods only

Why We Like It

Pod coffee machines are becoming the standard, propping up most kitchen counters like a kettle or toaster. One of the kitchen essentials. Of all the coffee capsule options, Nespresso is undoubtedly the class leader. And the Nespresso Vertuo Next is among the most popular machines.

As you’d guess from the name, the machine uses Nespresso’s newer Vertuo pods. They have little barcodes that tell the machine exactly how to extract the coffee. In other words, great taste every time. The Vertuo offers different sizes — single espresso, double espresso, a gran lungo, a regular coffee, or an alto coffee — and a wide variety of capsule flavours, blends, and strengths.

It's all about convenience. That’s what makes these machines so popular. And the Nespresso Vertuo Next is among the smallest Nespresso models, making it an ideal choice if you’re struggling for counter space).

The Nespresso Vertuo Plus heats up in just 30 seconds and makes great-tasting coffee at the push of a button. If you’re the kind of person who’s always in rush in the morning and needs that coffee hit double-quick (that's pretty much all of us, then), the Nespresso Vertuo Plus is a stellar choice.

Barista Express by Sage

The Good & The Bad

  • Generous capacity
  • Removable water tank
  • Conical burr grinder
  • Adjustable grind
  • Big price tag
  • Eats up counter space
  • Fiddly operation at first

Why We Like It

The Barista Express by Sage has all the equipment you need to make a first-rate espresso every single time: A 15 bar pump, 54mm tamper, stainless-steel burr grinder, removable water tank, and a 1,600 watt thermo coil heating system. Plus filter baskets, a steam wand and milk jug, and cleaning kit.

It's quick off the mark, too. Select your grind and volume options (single or double shot), and those beans will transform into espresso in less than a minute. Waiting around the Starbucks counter will be a thing of the past.

Aficionados will understand the value of the built-in burr grinder. Its grinding action maximises the surface area of the grinds, which means optimal flavour. Adjust the size of the grinds, from fine to coarse, to get the coffee just right.

The temperature is also key to striking that perfect flavour. The Barista Express has digital temperature control technology, ensuring perfect — which means always to your preference — flavour extraction.

Siemens EQ500 coffee machine

The Good & The Bad

  • Aroma double shot
  • Lots of pre-set modes
  • Integrated milk frothing
  • Customisable options
  • Auto cleaning and descaling
  • Slow brewing times
  • Not as sexy as some machines

Why We Like It

Who likes their coffee nice and strong? Actually, let’s rephrase that. Who doesn’t like their coffee nice and strong? Yes, we thought so. That’s why the Siemens EQ 500 could be your perfect machine.

Its premier feature is the "aromaDouble Shot" function, made for when you want some extra kick. In short, it grinds and brews two single shots instead of a double shot. That means less water, less bitterness, and more flavour.

The EQ 500 also comes equipped with a ceramDrive grinder, which grinds beans to an even consistency, bringing out nuanced, aromatic notes. It has an easy-to-use Coffee Select display, allowing you to choose whatever coffee you like — espresso, cappuccino, Americano, flat white, whatever — while automatic milk frothing eliminates the need for a steam wand or frother.

It’s also very hygienic, with an autoMilk steam clean function that cleans automatically after every drink. In fact, this machine descales at the push of a button. It’s a system worth keeping clean too. The intricate iAroma System is designed to produce a great flavour every single time.

L'or Barista Coffee Machine

The Good & The Bad

  • Double shot capsules
  • Coffee style options
  • Adjustable settings
  • Smart capsule tech
  • More advanced machines available
  • Surplus for singletons

Why We Like It

The L'or Barista Coffee Machine gives you two coffees for the price of one thanks to double shot capsules that pour two cups at the same time. It makes a range of coffee styles, too. Choose from espresso, ristretto, latte, or lungo.

You don’t have to drink two cups at once, of course. This capsule machine works with either the L’or barista double shot capsules and L’or espresso single shot capsules. It works with Nespresso pods too, which is a tasty bonus.

The machine has various customisable features and uses smart capsule recognition, a cool bit of tech that reads the L’or capsules and automatically tweaks settings to get the optimum favour. Other nice touches include an adjustable drip tray, 19 bars of pressure, and an integrated milk frother.

It's a perfect machine for a household of coffee lovers because there’s no waiting around for your cup with this double whammer. It's also great for couples who enjoy having a cup of coffee together in the morning.

Melitta Barista TS Smart Coffee Machine

The Good & The Bad

  • Control from your phone
  • 21 recipes
  • Steam cleans its pipes
  • Integrated frother
  • Bit of a hefty unit
  • Tech is too much for some

Why We Like It

There’s almost too much to get your head around with this machine. Its features go above and beyond. It's really flash and fancy. So, while it’s expensive — indeed, this is a serious coffee lovers-only price tag — the Melitta Barista TS Smart Coffee Machine is something special.

Let’s start with its most obvious features. It has a double cup pour, which makes it perfect for couples, plus a highly effective grinder, automatic self-cleaning, and an airtight double-bean chamber that ensures a rotation of coffee flavour. But what we love best are its smart features. With the Melitta Connect app (on both iOS and Android) you can remotely control your coffee-making.

If you’re the kind of coffee drinker who believes that variety is the spice of a coffee-based life, the Melitta Barista boasts 21 pre-set coffee recipes. You can tweak and customise these even more in the Melitta Connect app, and choose between pre-ground coffee or beans. When it comes to bean-to-cup, it doesn’t get much better — or smarter — than this hi-tech machine.

EspressoWorks All-in-One Barista coffee machine

The Good & The Bad

  • Gets ready in 45 seconds
  • Pre-set drink options
  • Grinder and frother
  • Lots of accessories
  • Lo-fi tech
  • Grinder isn't integrated

Why We Like It

Sometimes you just want an appliance that does everything, an all-in-one machine that shoulders every part of the process. That’s what makes a machine like the EspressoWorks All-in-One Barista so brilliant.

It’s both an espresso and cappuccino maker with an integrated milk frother, electric grinder, and a selection of ready-to-brew drink options.

It’s got all the extras you need too, including a measuring spoon and tamper and both single and double shot baskets. It even has cappuccino stencil templates for when you’re feeling a bit arty. Our favourite feature of all, however, is the fact it’s warmed up and ready to go in just 45 seconds. The EspressoWorks All-in-One Barista is all about making things easier.

OK, there are quibbles: The grinder isn't attached like with other machines, and it seems basic compared to smart tech models, but it’s hard to argue with this level of convenience. It really is everything you need in one machine.

Bialetti Moka Express

The Good & The Bad

  • Simple to use
  • Authentic Italian-made
  • Compact
  • Multiple size options
  • Obviously low tech
  • Not technically espresso

Why We Like It

Alright, so this isn’t a machine, but if great tasting coffee is the priority (as it should be), you can’t ignore the stovetop coffee maker. In this case, the Bialetti Moka Express, one of the most popular stovetop coffee makers available.

It’s authentically Italian-made and refreshingly cheap. And while the Bialetti Moka Express doesn't make what picky coffee-heads would call espresso (because it doesn’t have the bars of pressure required for espresso), it instead makes “moka” — a mix between coffee and espresso – though Bialetti calls it a “rich authentic espresso”. And with 80 years' experience, they should know.

Fill the bottom chamber with water and the second chamber with ground beans. Put it on the stove and let it brew. It's made from polished aluminium with an eight-sided shape to diffuse heat evenly, boosting the aroma.
