New CS2 update brings back CSGO's silky smooth camera shake

Counter-Strike 2 developer Valve has just dropped a new mini-patch, and it looks to be a bit of a game-changer despite its diminutive size. CS2's unruly camera shake has long been a major complaint among players, and it's just gotten a whole lot better.

As per the Counter-Strike 2 update notes, Valve has "adjusted camera motion due to recoil to match CS:GO more closely." At first glance, it doesn't look like much of a patch, but if you've put any time into the FPS game and its predecessor, you'll know that CS2's screen shake can be quite… extreme. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not like it was ever motion sickness-inducing, but it certainly adds another layer of visual bleh when you're trying to navigate your way through a gunfight.

The result of this change is substantial. As we can see in this demo from Avi 'Thour CS2' Thour below, the experience is considerably less jittery than before. Valve says bullet trajectories "should continue to match CS2," so hopefully it won't take any real muscle memory adjustment to get used to the smoother camera.

Now that things have gotten a lot more buttery, it's time for Valve to double down and add what we all really want: viewmodel_recoil 0. If we're finally getting these sorts of quality-of-life updates, then I'm hoping that we'll soon be able to knock off the kickback animations from weapons, removing more distracting visual clutter and allowing us to focus entirely on hitting shots (Lord Gaben knows I need it).

Elsewhere in the patch notes, Valve's fixed up some Animgraph 2 bugs now that the updated animations are out in the wild, plus some sneaky ladder movement tech and a crash that could happen when transitioning from CT to T side at halftime. It's a very tidy little update indeed, and I can't wait to have a less stuttery time in-game.
