Counter-Strike 2 pro handed ten-year ban for punching opponent on stage

There's always one person who takes trash talk too far. There's always someone ragequitting because they get (rightfully) knocked for hurling racist, sexist, or other-ist abuse down voice chat in even the most benign online games. I grew up in Modern Warfare 2 lobbies, where I saw the worst of humanity coalesce into an amorphous blob of abuse and expletives. But there's an element of safety behind a screen; safety which was breached at the DACH CS Masters Counter-Strike 2 tournament this weekend, where one player sucker punched another live on stage after some mild trash talk.

The player, known as 'MAUschine' punched opponent Fabian 'Spidergum' Salomon after losing to regnum4games in the final of the semi-professional tournament. The players for both teams were arriving on stage for regnum4games to be crowned champions. But, as Salomon lined up alongside his teammates, MAUschine sucker punched him in the side of the head, stunning the player and knocking his glasses to the floor.

DACH Counter-Strike 2 tournament's tweet detailing mauschine's ban

The host immediately requests MAUschine be removed from the stage, and soon after, tournament organizer DACH announced that the 31 year old is banned from its events for "at least ten years." It has also reported the incident to Counter-Strike 2's competitive body, ESIC, meaning that MAUschine could face a lengthier ban across numerous games. It's safe to say he won't be competing in the FPS game's pro scene any time soon.

"Surprisingly, we do not tolerate physical assaults against other players at LAN and have acted accordingly," DACH wrote on social media after the event. "MAUschine is banned for at least ten years and the incident has additionally been reported to ESIC. In case it wasn't clear: We think violence is pretty shitty and it has no place in our league."

While the results of ESIC's investigation are yet to be revealed, it's good to see the tournament organizer taking responsibility and not condoning the violence.

The reasons for the punch are unknown, but it seems that Salomon had been trashtalking MAUschine in the final the previous day. According to one user on X, Salomon had mimicked MAUschine's celebration after clutching some key kills, which the latter took to heart.

MAUschine held onto this anger at the perceived sleight overnight, and took it out on Salomon on-stage the next day. Was it worth the ten-year ban that may effectively end his career? Only he can say, but maybe these repercussions will cause him to rethink his reactions to, let's face it, some very mild trash talk in future.

DACH has set a precedent for future violent outbursts, which should prevent any further incidents at its tournaments. Hopefully ESIC will double down on the ban to really show players and viewers that this isn't an acceptable reaction under any circumstances.
