These classic World of Darkness TTRPGs might get the "Bloodlines 2 treatment"

The World of Darkness is just that: a world. While Vampire: The Masquerade is very much White Wolf's flagship TTRPG, there's also Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Hunter: The Reckoning, then seemingly long-forgotten entries like Mage: The Ascension and Changeling: The Dreaming - more on those later. While the noir-ish setting of VTM lends itself perfectly to videogames, we've also seen Hunter's self-titled videogame release in 2002, then Nacon brought Werewolf to virtual life with Earthblood in 2022, followed up by Choice of Games' choose-your-own-adventure-style visual novel, The Book of Hungry Names, in 2024. But with White Wolf taking ownership of the World of Darkness all over again, I ask LA By Night icon Jason Carl about the team's plans to adapt Werewolf or Hunter into projects as ambitious as Bloodlines 2.

"Who says we're not already?" he laughs, clutching an adorable skeleton coffee mug, oozing mystery. "The answer is yes. All of those supernatural creatures have their own stories to tell, and many of them are just waiting their turn and for the right story to come along."

With the Bloodlines 2 release date still not set in stone, this doesn't exactly come as a surprise. While The Chinese Room's highly anticipated vampire game is expected sometime in October 2025, the road to get here hasn't been easy, with studio changeovers, delays, and now layoffs. It means that we might be waiting a while before we see some of White Wolf's other TTRPGs reborn as videogames, but Carl promises that some of the company's underloved games will return and potentially get "the Bloodlines 2 treatment."

"It's not just Hunter and Werewolf," he tells me. "It's no secret that, when we set up our in-house publishing business, we've been exploring many of the other World of Darkness games that people have been waiting for and that are underdeveloped. We've got our eyes on Mage [The Ascension], we've got our eyes on The Dark Ages [a World of Darkness setting], we've got our eyes on Changeling [The Dreaming]; we're spending a lot of time thinking about these three, and other games that people have been waiting for.

"I have spent considerable time thinking about what Mage would look like in a new edition," he muses. "The world we live in today is very different from what we imagined it would look like when the White Wolf team were building those previous editions of Mage, and I think we're all looking forward to the challenges of figuring out how pride and paradox work in this world, as opposed to the world we thought we were going to get.

"There's no obstacle or gatekeeping function that would prevent any of these from making it out into a videogame and getting the Bloodlines treatment. It's a question of time, resources, the right development partners, and story. We're very open to it, and I really hope it happens."

As someone who's largely stuck to World of Darkness' more mainstream IPs, I'm intrigued to finally take its older tabletop RPGs for a spin - either in person, or in virtual form. With Bloodlines 2 on the horizon, Carl tells me that it isn't going to be a "greatest hits album" or a redo of its predecessor; instead, it's its own, fully realized entity, and I'm excited to see how that sets the tone for WoD videogames going forward.
