World of Warcraft private server Stormforge is shutting down as Blizzard builds pressure on fan alternatives

Private World of Warcraft server group Stormforge is the latest such project to face imminent shutdown as Blizzard continues to take action against fan-run ways to play its MMORPG. Seemingly buoyed by its successful court case against Turtle WoW, Activision Blizzard is turning its attention towards other unofficial alternatives to WoW Classic. The developers of Stormforge confirm that the project will be brought fully to a close within the next month, following conversations with the World of Warcraft legal team.

"It is with a heavy heart we share the news of the project's shutdown," the Stormforge team writes in a post on its website. "Following a Cease and Desist request and subsequent positive discussions with a legal entity representing Blizzard Entertainment, we have agreed to cease all operations, development, and distribution of content related to World of Warcraft by May 14, 2026." It notes that realms will remain online and fully accessible until the closure, but that no new accounts can be made, and thanks Blizzard "for being understanding in regards to our closure process and the transition period."

Stormforge offers a range of servers that span various eras of WoW. Its most recent addition was Frostmourne, a Wrath of the Lich King server that opened on October 3, 2025, but its other offerings span The Burning Crusade and Mists of Pandaria. It was available to play for free, but included a shop with a range of character and skill boosts that could be bought using a premium currency. While it certainly wasn't as forward with its promotion as Turtle WoW, you'll still find plenty of coverage on YouTube, as seen below, and its website claims to have reached over 671,000 players, with 28,000 active over the last seven days.

With Blizzard winning its case against Turtle WoW last week, it's likely that the WoW legal team will have much more weight behind any pressure it chooses to put on other similar projects. Stormforge is just the latest in what I suspect might turn into a longer list. By allowing a month-long shutdown period, Blizzard is giving the team some leeway, while still with the presumed goal of ensuring that official WoW Classic servers are the only game in town for anyone who wants a throwback World of Warcraft experience.

"We know this is not easy news," the Stormforge team continues. "Over the years we have strived to deliver the best experience and the highest quality possible. We have put years of hard work, dedication, and passion into building Stormforge into what it is today and we could not be more proud of what we achieved and the community we have fostered. We want to thank every single one of you who has been part of this journey."

A letter from the Stormforge team:

"Whether you joined for just a day or spent many years with us, you helped shape what Stormforge became, and we are very grateful for that." The team asks that players "respect this transition period" and "keep the atmosphere positive," avoiding doing anything "that could negatively impact the project or others during these final weeks." Given that the shutdown is inevitable, it wishes to close things out "in a good way."

The developers of Stormforge state that this "is not necessarily the end of everything we do," although stresses, "We won't be involved in operating private servers for Activision or Blizzard games going forward." Instead, it plans "to channel our passion and dedication into other creative endeavors - this time focused on our own ideas."
