Fable on track for 2026 release despite delay rumors, Playground confirms, and I for one am relieved
I've got a lot riding on Fable. I'm far more interested in a fantasy world where your actions impact NPCs' perceptions of you than GTA 6's modern interpretation of a similar core mechanic. Listen, I'd rather brew a poisonous potion for an annoying gnome than brandish a semi-automatic rifle at a police officer - shoot me. With an arcane bolt, obviously. When rumors suggested that Fable may have been internally delayed, I was a bit gutted. But the game's social media accounts seem to be doubling down on its fall release date, and there may be hope yet.
The rumors in question come from industry insider Jeff Grubb, who suggested that the Fable release date had been "pushed internally." He suspected it may launch in December rather than fall, but didn't rule out a delay until 2027.

However, Playground Games' social media accounts seem to have taken this personally, and are fully committing to the current release period: fall 2026. In reply to one poster on X who expressed excitement about the forthcoming fantasy game, the official Fable account posted, "Excited to welcome you back to Albion in Autumn 2026." Autumn, for all you Americans out there, is British for fall. You'll have to brush up on that and a bunch of other Britishisms before playing.
However, there is still no concrete release date for the game, which is likely why the rumors pervade. If publisher Xbox announced an official release date, people would be more confident that Playground was on track to complete the game on time. As it is, we've seen a few dozen seconds of actual gameplay after years of CGI teases. It's no wonder players are a bit antsy.

Despite the posts on social media, some players still don't believe Fable will release this year. "This thing is not making 2026," writes one reply. "How set in stone is Autumn?" asks another. "You get fans of the game have started to worry because of the rumors… [sic]"
In an era when games are being canceled before they've even released, players don't want Fable to suffer the same fate as The Last of Us Online, Perfect Dark, Everwild, Wonder Woman, and countless others. Personally I don't think Xbox can afford to shelve its biggest first-party release of the year, but the industry has surprised me before and I'm still waiting for my crystal ball to arrive in the post.

At this point, however, there's nothing fans can do but wait. Maybe Fable releases in fall. Maybe it's delayed until 2027. All we can do is keep our eyes on Playground's socials, look out for giant, Richard Ayoade-shaped announcements at Xbox showcases, and cross our crooked witch's fingers that everything is going to plan.
