Overwatch ranks explained - skill tiers and ranked rewards

Want to know how the Overwatch ranks work? To compete with the best players, you must climb the Overwatch ranks by winning ranked matches. If you're brand new to Overwatch, you will have to play 20 unranked games in either standard or Stadium before you're allowed to compete.

We should note that your Overwatch rank doesn't carry over between Competitive and Stadium in the free PC game - it doesn't matter if you're Top 500 in Stadium, you could be placed in Bronze in Competitive. Here's everything you need to know about Overwatch ranks, including how many skill divisions there are, what ranked rewards are on offer, and how Competitive Points work.

Overwatch rank overview

If you're playing on a brand new account, you must win 20 games in Unranked before you're allowed to participate in competitive play. This not only gives you a rough idea about what to expect in the ranked modes, it also gives the Matchmaking Rating (MMR) system a chance to gauge how good you are.

Your unranked MMR is hidden, but you can work out roughly where the system thinks you belong based on the level of your opponents. When you're finally allowed to play the competitive modes, you'll be given a rank after playing ten games. At the end of each match, you will see the results of your first ten matches, alongside your predicted rank.

Depending on which game mode you've selected, you may be asked to choose a role before you enter the queue. You have a separate rank for each role in the multiplayer game, so while you may be a Grandmaster Damage player, that doesn't factor into your ranks for Support and Tank.

Here are all the skill tiers in Overwatch:

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Master
  • Grandmaster
  • Champion / Top 500 Challenger

Each skill tier is split into five divisions, with five being the lowest and one being the highest. For example, if you're placed in Gold 1, your next rank up would be Platinum 5. As you play matches, you will see a promotion progress bar at the end of each match, showing precisely why you gained or lost rank. If you go on a big winning streak, you'll rank up fast - likewise, if you lose consecutive games, your rank will fall.

There are two types of groups in Overwatch: wide and narrow. Wide groups are determined by the rank difference between the players - the further you get into the skill tiers, the smaller the gap can be between the tiers. Naturally, narrow groups have less of a gap between ranks. Due to the challenges of creating fair matches for players in a wide group, you may have to wait considerably longer for a game compared to players in narrow groups.

Between Bronze and Diamond, you can group up with players between those skill tiers, albeit with one restriction. You can't create wide groups of four, presumably because it's difficult for the matchmaking system to find a fair match. Solo players won't be matched up against wide groups; instead, they're restricted to playing with other solo players and narrow groups only.

Overwatch Stadium rank overview

Many of the same principles from Competitive carry over to Stadium, with some key differences. The main difference is that the grouping divisions are far more strict in Stadium compared to Competitive. Once you get to the higher Stadium ranks (beyond Elite), you won't be able to create wide groups like you can in Competitive.

Here are all the Stadium Leagues in Overwatch:

  • Rookie
  • Novice
  • Contender
  • Elite
  • Pro
  • All-Star
  • Legend / Top 500 Challenger

There are still divisions in each of the leagues, and ranks are still separated by each role. Unlike Competitive ranks, Stadium ranks reset every season, forcing you to climb back up the ladder. Thankfully, your predicted rank in Stadium makes it considerably easier to climb because you're protected from rank loss until you start to get close to your predicted rank.

Hero Skill Rating

Hero Skill Rating is a metric that doesn't affect your actual Overwatch rank, but it's an easy way to see at a glance how well you perform as certain characters in each role.

This ranking shows your top three most played heroes on your profile, with your rating being determined by factors like your win rate and kill death ratio. Even though your Hero Skill Rating appears after playing five matches, you need to finish your placement games first before it can appear.

Here are all the Hero Skill Rating thresholds in Overwatch:

  • Bronze: <1499
  • Silver: 1500 - 1999
  • Gold: 2000 - 2499
  • Platinum: 2500 - 2999
  • Diamond: 3000 - 3499
  • Master: 3500 - 3999
  • Grandmaster: 4000 - 4499
  • Champion: 4500 - 5000

Overwatch Competitive Points

You don't have to be a top-tier player to receive ranked rewards. Simply winning or drawing games is enough to start earning Competitive Points - the more games you win, the more points you'll earn.

Here's how many Competitive Points you can earn in Overwatch:

  • Competitive Win: 10 Competitive Points
  • Competitive Draw: 5 Competitive Points
  • Stadium Win: 20 Competitive Points

Competitive Points can be spent on weapon variants, letting you apply a shiny material finish over your existing weapon skins. Weapon variants will set you back 3,000 Competitive Points. In 2026, the most recent weapon variant is Crimson Wolf, and this can only be purchased using Competitive Points earned throughout 2026.

At the beginning of each year, a new weapon variant is released, and any Competitive Points you had get converted to Legacy Competitive Points. Legacy points can be used to purchase old weapon variants: Golden, Jade, and Galactic.

There are exclusive rewards that you can obtain if you reach a certain level in both Competitive and Stadium. In Competitive, you'll need to reach Diamond between Season 1 and Season 3 to receive Doomfist's Crimson Wolf skin. You don't need to finish the season in Diamond; once you reach this skill tier, you automatically unlock the skin.

As for Stadium, the ranked rewards change each season. In Season 1, you'll need to reach Elite in Stadium to unlock skins for Sigma, Zenyatta, and Tracer, and if you reach All-Star, you'll unlock an exclusive Reinhardt skin.

Overwatch Competitive Drives

At the end of each season, limited-time events called Competitive Drives give players a chance to earn both Competitive Points and signature rewards, giving your name a beautiful new banner to display on the scoreboard. Your Overwatch Drive Score is shared across Competitive and Stadium, with Stadium offering more points per win.

Here's how many Drive Points you can earn and lose in Overwatch:

  • Competitive Win: 210 Drive Score
  • Competitive Loss: Lose up to 63 Drive Score
  • Stadium Win: 265 Drive Score
  • Stadium Loss: Lose up to 80 Drive Score
  • Group Bonus: 50 Drive Score

As you earn Drive Score, you can reach checkpoints that unlock rewards. Once you reach a checkpoint, you can't fall below that amount of points, so you don't need to worry about starting from scratch if you go on a long losing streak.

Here are the checkpoints and rewards for the current Overwatch Drive:

  • 500 Drive Score: 500 Competitive Points
  • 1,000 Drive Score: Signature
  • 1,600 Drive Score: 1,000 Competitive Points
  • 2,200 Drive Score: Upgraded Signature
  • 3,000 Drive Score: 1,500 Competitive Points
  • 4,000 Drive Score: Upgraded Animated Signature
