New DBD patch notes finally take aim at its troublesome stacking modifiers

There's nothing worse than power creep. League of Legends has it. Valorant has it. Overwatch is slowly starting to have it. As online multiplayer games grow and grow, older members of the roster simply get left behind as a more effective characters take their place, or their abilities become moot (thinking of my dear top laner, Singed). Dead by Daylight isn't immune to that creep, with new Killers and Survivors forever getting more complex kits. That, in part, has lead to a huge number of in-game modifiers which, until now, have been allowed to stack infinitely. The latest round of DBD patch notes, however, have finally addressed one of my biggest complaints about the game.

The core focus of today's Dead by Daylight patch is the new Diminishing Returns system. Whenever you enter a Trial, any gameplay modifiers and status effects will begin to degrade over time. You'll get the full bonus from the most effective modifier, then half of the bonus of the second most effective. That then decays to 25% of the third, 12.5% for the fourth, and just 5% for any other status effects.

It's worth noting that item addons are not affected by this, so retain their full modifier value.

That's all a little confusing, though, so let's take repair speed as an example. If you were using Prove Thyself, with the addition of a Toolbox with Socket Swivels, you'd be able to burst down generators pretty quickly. Now, with the latest patch, the 50% boost from Toolbox and the boost from Prove Thyself will be affected by Diminishing Returns.

As the biggest buff on the list, you'll still get the full 50% effect of Toolbox. The 30% increase applied by Socket Swivels also remains, because it's an item addon. However, the smaller increase from Prove Thyself (based on close-range Survivors) will be cut in half. Socket Swivels, as a result, is going to be really, really strong across the next few patches.

"After ten years of Dead by Daylight, the ability of Killers and Survivors to stack modifiers indefinitely has enabled ever-accelerating and more intense gameplay," Behaviour writes. "With this update, we aim to normalize how modifiers from different sources interact against each other in order to better preserve the integrity of game.

"This change will help us as developers create new interesting powers, items and perks with our roster of existing game modifiers, with far less risk of creating unintended game-breaking scenarios."

The Diminishing Returns system is currently live on the DBD PTB. There are a slew of other updates, too, including color customization for new auras, animation changes to the progress bar, and a collection of buffs and nerfs across various Killers and their addons.

The modifier stacking issue is something that's plagued the game for a while. It's become really easy to create generator-bursting builds that make playing Killer an absolute nightmare, especially if you're maining a more late-game-focused character. This should help iron out some of the balancing issues, giving Killers a bit more oomph while making item addons a little bit more useful for Survivors.

It feeds into Behaviour's ongoing attempts to fix DBD's core systems, which was the primary focus of 2025, and has trickled into 2026. While I love the game, it's no secret it's been in a bit of a weird spot for the past couple of years. Seemingly small changes like this are absolutely huge, and while I'd love to have a dozen K-pop chapters a year, I'm happy that this is where the devs are focusing their efforts. But another No Escape or Bleeds on Me-style banger would be great, so y'know, just whenever you get time, Behaviour.
