Overwatch's Anran finally gets her glow-up. "Playful" is out, "sincere" is in, but is it enough?

While Mizuki is absolutely my new best boi, when it comes to playing DPS, Anran is my insta-lock. Whenever Sombra is banned (which is more often than I expected) I immediately default to the Chinese flanker, with her impressive mobility and fiery kit making her the perfect alternative. She has, however, been embroiled in controversy, with her voice actor, Fareeha Yue Andersen, calling out Overwatch's 'same face syndrome' when the hero released earlier this year. As a result, the character's visage has undergone a slight rework, and we've finally caught a glimpse of the new, somewhat improved Anran.

When Anran released with Overwatch Season 1, Andersen claimed that she embodied the "ozempic-chic" social media beauty standards that have become mainstream today. As a result, Blizzard confirmed that it was updating the FPS game's fiery hero to make her "look and feel more like the fierce older sister that we all envision her to be," with a release date set for later in Season 1.

Since then we've seen Mizuki get a surprise makeover (he has a jaw under that mask now) but no real discussion of when to expect the reworked Anran. The silence has been broken, however, and it's split fans down the middle.

"In Season 2, we're introducing an updated look for Anran," the official Overwatch X account says. "She didn't fully land as the fiery and fierce sister of Wuyang that we hoped she would. With this update, our team focused on strengthening her overall presence."

The accompanying video, narrated by game director Aaron Keller, showcases the character's new look. She's a little less doe-eyed and innocent; there's some determination in those eyes, making her feel a little older, and to quote Keller, less "playful." Her mouth also doesn't have the odd, somewhat pursed lip we saw before, and instead curves upwards into a mischievous little smirk - probably because she's about to ult your backline.

"We focused on her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth and we moved away from that baby face look and expression to something more sincere and more mature," Keller continues. "Even something like a simple posture change can help Anran feel, well, more like Anran. We're really happy with the way these changes turned out, and also that she has a closer resemblance to her brother, Wuyang.

"We have five more heroes coming this year, and we want all of them to feel true to who they are," Keller says. "Going through this process has really helped the team dial in this next set of heroes. So please, keep sharing your thoughts, and enjoy Season 2."

While I personally feel like Blizzard has done a pretty good job here - and respect the fact that it went back in and made adjustments in the first place - the response has been somewhat mixed. Some argue that her appearance still doesn't match her official cinematic, while others state that the changes are relatively minimal. Initially, I thought the same, but looking at Blizzard's infographic below, I'd argue that the adjustments are relatively substantial.

Andersen has also weighed in, writing, "so grateful for this update, she looks much more like the strong older sibling we knew her to be!" She does state that she'll be chatting a little bit more about it on-stream "tonight" (presumably the evening of Tuesday, April 7), so if you're interested in her full thoughts, tune in there.

Anran's new look arrives with Overwatch Season 2, currently slated to launch on Tuesday, April 14.

I've ranted about 'same face syndrome' (or changed face syndrome) in videogames before. It's something League of Legends struggles with (the LeBlanc rework was at least a step in the right direction), and something that Blizzard's shooter has fallen afoul of many times during its stint as Overwatch 2. I'm glad to see that Blizzard has taken some action here - Anran does look and feel like the character we wanted her to be.

Is she exactly the same as in her cinematic? No. Could she perhaps be a little more somber? Yes. But either way, this is a rare instance of a developer actually listening and trying to make a positive change. That, in my mind, is a W.
