Grab Resident Evil Requiem's prequel at 75% off, if you're quick

When the Resident Evil Requiem trailer premiered earlier this year at the Summer Games, I lost it! I am a massive fan of the franchise, to the extent that I am considering it for my next tattoo. So, naturally, the announcement got me wanting to shoot some zombos. I love the combination of psychological and grotesque body horror of Biohazard, but I feel that Resident Evil Village is the cream of the crop and the one I recommend playing first if you're new to the series or just wanting to catch up. Fortunately, it's 75% off over at Humble right now, making now a good time to add it to your library.

As you have probably guessed, Resident Evil Village is my favourite horror game. It's not just a survival horror, it's the best survival game, and I will stand by that until I am in the cold ground… and probably even after I return as a zombie. It blends psychological horror with body horror and sprinkles in a gothic twist for good measure. Story-wise, you'll find that Village offers one of the most compelling stories in the series.

Village continues to follow the character of Ethan Winters. Years have passed since the incident at the Baker house, but unfortunately, the horror never ends for little Ethan, oh no. Out of nowhere old Chris Redfield shows up and nabs Ethan and Mia's kid, Rose. Ethan finds himself in a remote Eastern European village, which is overrun by nasties in the pursuit of Rose. As it happens, this "village" is also home to a cult, a tall Vampire lady, and the mysterious Mother Miranda.

Village shares a lot of the same mechanics as previous games in the series. Besides all the scary stuff, like being chased by a deformed fetus, Village is packed with puzzles. You'll need to move statues or light things, stuff like that, nothing insanely cryptic like you'd find in P.T. but still enough to get your brain whirring. You'll also find a fair number of locked doors that force you to explore the terrain where you'll inevitably run into a Lycan or four.

Besides puzzles, combat is where the challenge lies. In our Resident Evil Village review, Dustin Bailey says "Village works because its enemies are satisfying to fight, and the core of its cast of monsters are fast-moving, humanoid creatures with lupine tendencies." Then there is the Duke as well. 'What're ya buyin'? This chappie is reminiscent of the merchant in RE4. He'll flog you weapons, ammo, herbs, you name it. Just remember that inventory management is important in this game. You'll want to ensure you have enough space should you need to carry a key… or a crank.
