Battlefield 6's transformative new creation tool makes Portal much more powerful: "no more compromises"

The next Battlefield 6 update will unlock a new era for its Portal creation tools, giving you the ability to trigger interactions with far more precision than was previously possible. The Portal Gadget is set to arrive alongside the Hunter/Prey update, the third and final phase of BF6 Season 2, which launches in just a couple of weeks. Also included are overhauls to the core multiplayer progression system and team communication features.

While Battlefield 6 can sometimes feel a little by-the-numbers in comparison to more modern, distinctive multiplayer games like Arc Raiders or Rainbow Six Siege's new Metal Gear-themed season, the Battlefield Portal is its saving grace. It allows for everything from simple rules tweaks to fully transformative experiences, such as the recently launched BattleGolf from 'Nodone_00,' which turns BF6 into a golf game. However, it's always been somewhat held back by an inability to deploy custom logic. That's about to change.

"Until now, there hasn't been an intuitive way for players to activate custom logic whenever they choose," Battlefield Studios writes. "There's no true 'Portal button,' and most inputs are already tied to core gameplay or limited to specific contexts. This has led creators to rely on fixed interact points, force players into specific locations, or use clunky workarounds like 'crouch to confirm.' Portal Gadget changes that."

The Portal Gadget can be added to a player's inventory and equipped like any standard gadget, "but instead of performing a traditional in-game action, it becomes a powerful trigger for custom events." It's linked to the logic script that makes your Portal Experience tick, and you've got the freedom to choose when to hand it to people and bind custom interactions to its inputs and events.

"No more workarounds. No more compromises. Portal Gadget unlocks more intentional, responsive interactions, making it easier than ever to build dynamic, immersive experiences that behave exactly how you want them to." The Portal Gadget will be included with the Hunter/Prey update on Tuesday April 14, and there will be a readme file and examples in the software development kit to ensure you've got everything you need to know to start using it. I'm already excited to see what people can make.

Having already streamlined and accelerated the progression curve over the course of Battlefield 6 Season 2, the developer is continuing to make changes with the Hunter/Prey update. You'll now get Mastery XP simply for using weapons and vehicles, not just scoring eliminations. The rate of experience across different modes is being adjusted "to keep progression more consistent between playlists."

Battlefield Studios is also tackling "several issues that affected spotting and ping reliability across battle royale and multiplayer." You should find spotting vehicles and drones at long range easier, and enemy soldiers will be treated with a higher priority over other nearby interactive objects. It will be tracking the effects of these changes, and hopes they can go some way to "restoring confidence in squad communication, and ensuring that when you ping something, it behaves the way you expect."

The Battlefield 6 Hunter/Prey update will launch on Tuesday April 14 as the third and final act of Season 2. Battlefield Studios also touches on its recent testing for battle royale solos, noting that it will be taking some to to "evaluate the areas highlighted during this test, make adjustments where needed, and use those learnings to help determine when battle royale solos return."
