Alleged Warframe data breach "confirmed false" by Digital Extremes

An alleged Warframe data breach has been confirmed as a false report by developer Digital Extremes. A post suggested that hacked data for more than 3,000,000 user records had been uploaded to a cybercrime forum, including details such as user IDs, email addresses, and IP addresses. However, community director Megan Everett states that, following an investigation, the studio has confirmed that this is "repackaged information" from a breach that took place close to the free Steam game's original launch.

"Hi Tenno," Everett writes in a post to the Warframe forums. "After a serious cybersecurity investigation today, we can confirm that a recent data breach claim is repackaged information from the 2014 breach and is being proclaimed as new." That old hack, which was publicly revealed in 2016, saw the usernames and emails of nearly 800,000 user accounts compromised. Fortunately, there appears to have been no repeat of the incident.

"We take cybersecurity very seriously," Everett continues, "and your online safety is extremely important to us at Digital Extremes." As always, we encourage you to have a strong password and 2FA activated. Thank you." Everett also confirms that the short delay for the launch of new Warframe update Operation: Atramentum, which has since gone live, was "not related" to the alleged breach or DE's investigation.

Rolling out one week on from the Shadowgrapher update, Operation: Atramentum introduces a new variant of the Follie's Hunt co-op mode, earning you Nightmare Tatters for collecting medallions along the way, with a bonus if you successfully finish. These can then be traded in for a wide range of rewards. You're also able to complete Nightmare Mode missions across the Origin System, with ten Nightmare Tatters awarded for the first completion of each of the time-limited challenges.

While a "hiccup" caused the new operation to launch later than intended, Digital Extremes was still able to push it live by the end of Thursday April 2. It will run until Thursday April 23, giving you three weeks to grab as many of the rewards as you can.

We recently spoke to Everett about the launch of the Shadowgrapher update, the ever-presence of player count debates, and Warframe's long-term growth. She asserted that Digital Extremes "will keep making Warframe if there's one player count."
