We're finally getting Gears of War E-Day gameplay as Xbox locks in major June 2026 showcase

Persona 6. Kingdom Hearts 4. Gears of War E-Day. There are plenty of games that have me regularly reaching for my clown makeup every time a new showcase rolls around. While we haven't nearly hit Silksanity levels just yet for the new Gears of War, I have been gnawing at the bars of my cage, impatiently awaiting any sign of life from The Coalition's upcoming prequel. Well, Cog nation, our prayers are finally being answered, as Xbox is not only featuring E-Day in its freshly-announced June 2026 showcase, but it's getting its own dedicated direct.

You know the meme with the white rabbit pointing at the stopwatch? That's been me waiting for The Coalition to offer up any sort of indication as to when the Gears of War E-Day release date will be. By the time the GoW E-Day Direct airs, it'll have been two years since we first caught a glimpse of the much younger, less-rugged versions of Marcus and Dom. According to Xbox, we're being treated to "new details, gameplay, and insights" surrounding the multiplayer game series' hitherto unexplored origin story, and all I can say is I hope its online arena isn't populated by sweats with Lancers; give me the wall bouncing, give me the two-piece.

Emergence Day will presumably be based primarily in the city of Kalona, where both Marcus and Dom's families reside. For the uninitiated, E-Day saw the subterranean Locust horde simultaneously take to the surface, bringing down 25% of the world's human population by the end of the first day in its brutally effective campaign. While GoW has never shied away from the gorier side of things, I'm anticipating E-Day will make for some pretty horrific viewing. I can't wait.

The 2026 Xbox Games Showcase will air on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 6pm GMT. The Gears of War E-Day Direct will immediately follow the conclusion of the show.

As for the main showcase itself, Xbox says we're in for "first gameplay looks and huge news" on its upcoming first and third-party offerings. I'm expecting to see some more Fable gubbins, alongside, hopefully, some sign of life from the long-awaited State of Decay 3. Though there have been plenty of rumblings from the rumor mill, alongside confirmation from Windows Central's Jez Corden that it had survived last year's layoffs round, Undead Labs has remained eerily quiet in recent times. As they say, though, 'no news is good news,' and I'm always a fan of studios refusing to show their hand until there's something substantial worth sharing.

With the appointment of new CEO Asha Sharma, there's been plenty of discussion surrounding the direction Microsoft's gaming division will take, and I wonder if the June showcase will be where we finally hear more. Already, the much maligned 'This is an Xbox' campaign has been brought to a swift end, while recent reports suggest Sharma wants to make Game Pass cheaper, and has even "kicked around ideas" with Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters over a potential bundle deal.

Considering the absolutely dire state of shareholder capitalism we're unfortunately operating in, to see something actually come down in price would represent a huge shift in market approach. If it materializes, though, then Xbox will definitely earn some brownie points from me.
