I missed my chance to play tactical shooter PUBG Blindspot, and now I'm filled with regret

PUBG: Blindspot was looking set to be the twist on the formula that finally hooked me into the PlayerUnknown extended universe, but now it won't get the chance. Arc Team and Krafton's PUBG Corporation have announced that the top-down, tactical shooter spinoff of battle royale titan PUBG: Battlegrounds will be closing in just a few days. Despite the initial launch earning itself a mostly positive reception from players during its opening months, the developer says it is "no longer able to sustainably provide the level of experience we set out to deliver through Early Access."

PUBG: Blindspot hit early access on Thursday February 5, just seven weeks ago. Combining the squad-strategy fundamentals of multiplayer games like Rainbow Six Siege and CS2 with the top-down action of classic Helldivers, it stands out from many of its peers. The name is also its big hook: fighting through tight building layouts with networks of rooms, sightlines are everything. If you can't catch a glimpse of an enemy under a window or sidling by a door frame, they're entirely gone from view. Vision is shared between teammates, and so finding the perfect angles (and ways to evade them) is critical to success.

As powerful as it is, team play in classic PUBG can often feel like an optional extra. In Blindspot it's essential, with each player and agent specializing in specific roles, designed to support and cover for one another. Fights are almost all short-to-mid range, and the high lethality makes coordinated positioning and pushes a must. Matches are fast but intense, and I was eagerly keeping an eye on its progress through Early Access, so I'm as surprised as many to discover that it won't be continuing.

"To everyone who has been part of the PUBG: Blindspot journey, thank you sincerely for your support," Arc Team developer Sequoia Yang writes. "Since our last update, the team has been exploring multiple ways to improve the experience and move the game forward. However, after careful consideration, we have come to the conclusion that we are no longer able to sustainably provide the level of experience we set out to deliver through Early Access.

"We place player experience at the center of every decision we make, and it is based on that principle that we have made this decision. As a result, PUBG: Blindspot's Early Access service will come to an end on Monday March 30." Yang adds, "We understand this may not be the outcome many of you were hoping for. PUBG: Blindspot was a bold attempt to explore new possibilities within the top-down tactical shooter space. Throughout this journey, the feedback and support from our players have meant a great deal to the team, and will continue to inform our future development efforts."

PUBG: Blindspot never made a big splash, with an all-time peak player count of just 3,251, and less than 1,000 active players throughout March. Players in the Steam reviews ask why Krafton, with the might of the PUBG name at its fingertips, didn't push harder on marketing. "This game is dead because nobody knows about it," writes one user, "The game itself is awesome. Tactical, something different enough to get your attention." Another adds, simply, "Great game, why you turn off?"

In retrospect, I'm kicking myself a little for not spending more time with it while I could. While I thought the concept was excellent, a very busy release calendar meant I decided to hold off on playing the free Steam game until the team had spent more time cooking through the Early Access period. I wouldn't be surprised if others made a similar choice, even if they tried it and liked it. Now that chance is gone. I'm sure Joni Mitchell and Counting Crows would have something to say about that.

Arc Team and PUBG Corporation have confirmed that PUBG: Blindspot's Early Access service will end on Monday March 30, 2026. "To everyone who believed in the game and supported its direction, we are truly grateful," Yang concludes. "The Arc Team will take some time to regroup, and we hope to return with new experiences in the future. It has been a privilege to build this game alongside our community. Thank you again."
