My favorite Minecraft spin-off is getting a sequel, and it's coming in 2026

Minecraft Dungeons 2 is real, and it's coming this year. I didn't need anything more to put a smile on my face after the Minecraft Live showcase, which already unveiled the adorable new Sulfur Cube mob that can be used to play all manner of creative minigames. But lead designer Jens Bergensten had other ideas, with a reveal he teased as "something we've been working on for quite some time."

That project is Minecraft Dungeons 2, a sequel to the 2020 dungeon-crawling action RPG, which I still hold up as by far the strongest Minecraft spin-off game, and a worthy entrant among the ranks of the best games like Diablo. Its slow-burn start gives way to some incredible synergies and combo potential; I still have fond memories of my firework arrow build, which split repeatedly into a dozen-odd explosive projectiles, and then ricocheted even more chaos in all directions when they hit enemies.

The prospect of a new adventure is more than enough to make me sit up in my seat, grab my pickaxe, and get ready for action, then. "A hero's work is never done," Mojang teases. "Disorder is brewing, and the world stands before a threat unlike any other. A new danger is growing in power ready to descend upon the land and unleash mayhem."

"You'll visit never-before-seen locations, battle new foes, and do your best to save a world in crisis, alone or with up to three friends," Bergensten remarks of the sequel. "This is an entirely new action-RPG, packed with high-stakes combat and epic amounts of loot." He promises more details in the coming months, and I can't wait to see what the team has been cooking up.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 is set to launch in 2026. If you've never played the first, it's still well worth a try, especially if you can find a friend to join you on the journey. While its action certainly picks up much more dramatically after your first run through the story, I would say the same about the likes of Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2, so I can't really hold it as too much of a complaint. It was worth the trek to get there, and the sequel is definitely one for my wishlist.
