Why Your Bedroom Doesn’t Feel Restful and the First Thing Experts Say to Change

The design of your bedroom does more than please the eye—it psychologically and physically influences how well you can relax and sleep. When a bedroom doesn’t feel restful, it’s often a subtle disruption unrelated to the comfort of the mattress and pillows. “Most of the time, the inability to relax or rest in a space occurs because your mind or your body continues to run when you’re physically trying to wind down,” says designer Ellie Stein.

We asked three designers what the first thing they’d recommend changing is if a bedroom didn't feel restful, and they each had the same simple answer. “If the bedroom doesn’t immediately feel calming, it’s likely interfering with sleep and is worth addressing,” says designer Liz Potarazu.

  • Ellie Stein is an NCIDQ-certified interior designer and owner of the interior design firm Stein Studio based in Nashville.
  • Cathleen Gruver is the lead designer at the Virginia-based Gruver Cooley.
  • Liz Potarazu is the CEO and principal designer of Maryland-based LP & Co.

“If a bedroom doesn’t feel relaxing, lighting is almost always the biggest issue,” says Potarazu. The reason isn’t all that surprising: lighting influences our body’s biology and internal clock. “Lighting plays a major role in regulating our circadian rhythm, which directly impacts sleep quality. Bright, overhead lighting at night can signal alertness, while softer, ambient lighting supports relaxation,” says Potarazu.

How to Tell If Your Lighting Is an Issue

“If your bedroom feels fine during the day but harsh or uncomfortable at night, lighting is almost always the issue,” says designer Cathleen Gruver. “Another tell is if you rely on the overhead light for everything,” she says, noting that bedrooms should not function like kitchens or offices when it comes to lighting. Gruver explains that cool overhead lighting can keep the brain in a more alert state, even if the rest of the room exudes calm. “Bedrooms should support rest, not stimulation, and lighting is often the biggest culprit when a space feels 'off,' but the homeowner cannot quite explain why,” Gruver says.

Tips for More Relaxing Bedroom Lighting

Add layered lighting: “Overhead lighting is great for everyday general tasks, but if you are trying to wind down and get comfortable, including multiple layers of lighting is an absolute must,” says Stein. “A successful update replaces a single overhead light with layered sources,” agrees Gruver. Adding bedside and table lamps, wall sconces, and even floor lamps will provide greater control over the lighting source. "The improved 'after' feels softer and more intentional," says Gruver.

Switch to warmer bulbs and dimmers: Simply changing the temperature of your light bulbs might be the key difference maker. Both Stein and Gruver suggest warm, 2700K bulbs for bedroom lighting. They also both suggest adding dimmers or dimmable fixtures. “This will allow you to set the mood and shift the room from bright and stimulating to soft and restorative,” says Stein.

Address natural light: “Blackout window treatments help control light exposure, bringing in daylight in the morning and fully darkening the room at night,” says Potarazu.

The Second Step

Lighting might be the first change you should address, but it’s not the only one to consider for a more restful bedroom. Gruver, Stein, and Potarazu all agree you need to remove clutter to find that calming zen. “Visual chaos creates low-level stress and keeps the nervous system from fully relaxing, making it harder to wind down and sleep well,” says Potarazu.

Stein recommends paring back what’s actually in your space, editing what stays based on need and the happiness it brings for a more conducive feel. “Once the excess is gone, you will finally have the breathing room to begin with a more intentional approach,” says Stein. Potarazu recommends implementing better storage and organization to help reduce visual clutter.

Vibrant colors and patterns can also add to visual clutter, so it doesn’t hurt to evaluate the textiles in your space, too. “Even beautiful furniture and accessories can feel overstimulating if there are too many competing colors or patterns,” says Gruver. “Simplifying the palette to softer, cohesive tones and removing unnecessary items allows the eye and mind to rest.”

Creating the Ultimate Place of Rest

Consciously and subconsciously, improved lighting and the elimination of visual clutter influence your ability to relax. Physically, comfortable furnishings round out the restful bedroom experience. “If you want to go one step further and really lean into that relaxed state, start layering warm materials,” says Stein. Fluffy duvets, cozy throws, and plush rugs, for example, add softness that invites you to relax in your space. “Texture and intentional layers play such a huge role in really giving you that overall warmth,” says Stein.

“Start with lighting, then address clutter, and finish with bedding and textiles," advises Potarazu. "That sequence delivers the biggest impact with the least overwhelm," she says.

It might take a little refining to figure out how lighting, clutter, color, and layers will come together in your bedroom to improve sleep and relaxation, but when it does, everything clicks. “It’s that same feeling you get when you walk into a hotel room you absolutely love, where the lighting is soft, the bed is inviting, everything feels thoroughly considered: your shoulders just drop, and you feel held by the space,” says Stein. “If you can climb into bed with a book and feel completely cocooned, like the room itself is wrapping around you in comfort, then you’ve succeeded in transforming your bedroom from a place that keeps you alert and stimulated into one that really allows you to unwind and rest.”
