Mewgenics co-creator Edmund McMillen says first DLC will be "small" - but it certainly doesn't sound like that to me

Every time I ask one of my pals how much time they've put into Mewgenics, it's always the same response: "oh, not that long, only a hundred hours." So expansive is Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel's feline-focused strategy game that you can spend weeks entrenched in breeding the perfect squad, and you'll have barely cat-scratched the surface. Despite only being out for a month, its first DLC is in the works, described by McMillen as "small." From what's being promised though, I'd posit it's anything but.

Responding to a player's question on X, McMillen has revealed that the upcoming Mewgenics DLC will be "small but substantial enough to make many happy." He goes on to say that there will be four new classes, sporting over 300 fresh abilities for you to go to town with. Now, I'm no mathematician, but considering there are only 14 classes in the game right now, a ~30% increase is anything but minute.

Mewgenics DLC small size, new classes: McMillen's X

A couple weeks back, Glaiel first hinted at the DLC, loosely offering plausible time scales for when we can expect it to arrive. Currently, the devs are targeting the end of next year, citing "bugfixes and support for the base game," "accounting nonsense," and "house hunting" as major, valid roadblocks before they can get to work on it in earnest.

Glaiel also reckons he has "at least two" Mewgenics expansions in him, so don't expect the first DLC to be the last. McMillen suggests here that the second DLC will be "big," and "might focus on a fourth act," so expect to add, oh, I don't know, another couple hundred hours to your tally.

Mewgenics has enjoyed a Balatro-like rise since its launch last month. It far exceeded its creators' expectations by zooming to a million sales in its first week, and toppling Hades 2's all-time peak player record. It's unsurprising, then, that McMillen and Glaiel are keen to keep the momentum going, even if the DLC is a ways off. Last week's update solved one of Ken's biggest early-game boss gripes, building on the quality-of-life improvements we've already seen.

As PK alludes in his Mewgenics review, the game is a bit like Marmite: you either love it or hate it. Regardless of how you feel about it, it's still one of the most entertaining roguelikes around right now, and it's only going to get better with time.
