2026 Is the ‘Year of Whimsy’—and It's Bringing Playful Personality Back to Home Design

There’s no denying that personality is having a moment in home design right now. From playful details to nostalgic styles, this year is all about embracing charm, character, and a touch of the unexpected. As such, designers are officially dubbing 2026 as the “Year of Whimsy,” and it’s ushering in a wave of playful personality that feels both refreshing and deeply personal.

Whimsy in 2026 isn’t about clutter or chaos—it’s about intention. It shows up in scalloped edges on furniture, delightfully patterned wallpaper in powder rooms, curvy silhouettes, storybook-inspired details, and meaningful decor that sparks conversation. After seasons of playing it safe, homeowners are craving spaces that feel joyful, expressive, and deeply personal.

If whimsy speaks to you, we’ve got you covered. We spoke to three interior designers to learn more about this playful approach to decorating and how to weave a little magic into your home without sacrificing sophistication.

  • Jenna Gross is the founder and principal designer of Colordrunk Designs, a full-service interior design studio specializing in colorful, whimsical, bespoke interiors based in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Samantha Tosti is the principal designer and founder of her eponymous firm, Tosti Design, which has offices in San Diego and Charleston.
  • Jessica Hobson is a Summit, New Jersey–based designer specializing in deeply layered, confidently colored interiors.

What Is Whimsy Home Decor?

Adding whimsy to your home is all about having fun with your home decor. It’s about letting loose and not taking your home (or yourself) too seriously. Unlike many home decor trends or styles, there’s no secret formula or checklist to achieving whimsy at home—anything that makes you smile, or sparks joy, is fair game. It’s a deeply personal process that will look different in every space.

“I think there are so many ways to add whimsy to your home, whether you want to go all in or just have a few winks here and there,” says Jenna Gross, founder and principal designer of Colordrunk Designs.

Think throw pillows with fringe trim, playful paintings adorning the walls, a hand-painted mural with hidden details, furniture or cabinetry with scalloped edges, or bursts of color in unexpected places (like doors or trim!). Whimsical home decor is about shedding expectations and letting your inner child loose to create a space that feels comforting, nostalgic, and anything but boring.

All About Balance

Of course, adding whimsy to your home is also a balancing act. Many homeowners crave spaces that feel fun and personal while also remaining sophisticated and practical. Fortunately, this is what interior designers specialize in.

“The trick is to not go too crazy (although if that's who you are, don't let me hold you back), so that when you do bring in something magical and fun, it's like the pop of color in the room, the conversation piece everyone is talking about,” says Samantha Tosti, founder and principal designer of Tosti Design. “If there are too many whimsical bits, they just don't feel quite as special.”

Bringing Whimsy Home

If your inner child is buried deep and you need some inspiration to get you started, here are a few ways designers love to bring whimsy into their clients’ spaces—and their own homes, too.

Whimsical Wall Coverings

According to Gross, wallpaper is probably the easiest way to add a touch of whimsy to your home. Think stars, fun animals, and dreamy clouds, she says. Whether you opt for subtle prints or a bold, eye-catching covering, wallpaper offers versatility and personality that few other design choices can. Powder rooms, kids' rooms, laundry rooms, and recreation spaces are particularly popular areas for whimsical wallpaper installations, but truly any room is fair game.

Spark Joy with Animal Motifs

Designers agree that animal motifs are a simple, foolproof way to add some fun and charm to any space. From artwork and textiles to throw pillows and statues, there are endless ways to incorporate the natural playfulness and charm animals offer.

“I love hunting for vintage brass animals that add a quirky layer to a bookshelf or a coffee table….Elephants, ducks, foxes—there are so many out there. They bring a fun touch to any space, and the brass is an instant warm-me-up,” says Jessica Hobson, founder and principal designer of Jessica Hobson Design. “One of my favorite finds was a tiny brass cricket we named Jiminy,” she adds.

If you have pets at home, incorporating some decor for your furry family members can also be a charming way to add whimsy. For example, creating a gallery wall filled with images of your dog’s favorite things (Squirrels? Tennis balls?) near their food bowl can be an endearing addition that is sure to spark joy and conversation.

Using Color in Unexpected Places

Unexpected doses of color are also a fun way to channel whimsy (plus, they’re totally in style right now!). Gross says that using color on the moulding, trim, and even the outside edges of a door is one of her favorite ways to create whimsy.

“Of course, high contrast is a blast, but even painting a shade or two darker than your walls can introduce low-key delight,” she says.

Other unexpected spots to add color include the ceiling (hello, color-drenching!), interior doors, and hardware and fixtures throughout your home. Essentially, anything traditionally white or neutral in a home can be reimagined with a touch of color for a whimsical, playful upgrade.

Choose Playful Artwork

Lastly, don’t discount the effect that artwork can have on a space. A painting, print, or wall hanging with a touch of whimsy is an easy way to incorporate charm into any room. Of course, animals are always a safe choice—think portraits of animals dressed as humans, forest scenes with storybook details, or simply a charming scene that evokes nostalgia and childlike wonder. If you have kids, framing their artwork and displaying it prominently throughout your home is another sweet and meaningful way to literally let your inner child loose.

Upgrade Your Hardware

Speaking of hardware—replacing your builder-grade door handles, cabinet knobs, light switches, vent covers, and even door hinges can instantly upgrade a space.

“Hardware that acts as an accessory can totally change the whole look of a cabinet and add a little fun,” Gross says.

Opt for pieces in fun shapes, colors, and finishes. Replace your switch plate covers for a dose of unexpected charm. Add curtain holdbacks with playful animal details, or top your door hinges with decorative hinge caps for a knowing wink of whimsy.

Whatever you choose, remember that as long as it makes you smile, it's worth making space for. The year of whimsy is about sparking joy, conversation, and connection at home—what could be better than that?
