Resident Evil Requiem director confirms Capcom is "hard at work" on a new story expansion

As if its dual protagonists, stunning cinematics, and intense horror action wasn't enough, Resident Evil Requiem's game director has just confirmed that a story expansion is in the works. I don't think this will come as much of a surprise to anyone, given that we've had plenty of DLC over the years for past Resi games and that Requiem has been an enormous success, but it's good to get confirmation nonetheless. While that will no doubt be a while away, there are a few things to look forward to in the shorter term, including a photo mode and a new minigame.

Resident Evil Requiem had all the right ingredients to be one of the best horror games of recent times and a high point for Capcom's series. A mixture of old and new with fresh-faced protagonist Grace Ashcroft and returning icon Leon Kennedy; two different styles of horror gameplay; support for both first and third-person perspectives; A-grade cinematics - the list goes on. But I didn't anticipate it to be quite this successful. Requiem's director, Koshi Nakanishi, has today confirmed in a message to fans that the game has sold five million copies since its launch less than two weeks ago.

Impressive stuff, but that's probably the least exciting thing Nakanishi has to share. In the video message, he confirms that updates will continue to arrive in Resident Evil Requiem to improve its very few remaining rough edges, but to also deliver new content. Soon, a photo mode will be added to Requiem, allowing you to capture a shotgun-toting Leon, a terrified Grace, or just a hauntingly beautiful slice of the game's scenery. But that's not all.

"On top of that, there's another surprise coming around May. We're planning to add a minigame," Nakanishi says. There's no kind of clue right now as to what that minigame will entail, but that's not stopped a lot of fans online jumping to the Mercenaries conclusion. This arcade-style mode typically lets players rack up as many kills as possible on set stages, and has appeared in multiple Resident Evil games over the years. However, this feels a bit more substantial than the "minigame" being teased here, so I'm not totally sold on that theory.

The news everyone wanted comes at the end of Nakanishi's message, though. After sifting through a stack of images printed on paper (which include some hilarious nods to things like players' obsession with who Leon's married to following the surprise reveal of his wedding ring) he lands on the sheet revealing an unnamed "story expansion" for Resident Evil Requiem.

"We are planning to make extra story content," he says. "In this story, we will delve deeper into the world of Requiem. We're hard at work on it now. It will take some time, so we ask for your patience and hope you'll look forward to it."

Exciting stuff, but as Nakanishi mentions, this appears to be a long way off. Perhaps the Requiem team laid some groundwork before Requiem's release, but chances are this only got the thumbs up after its success was assured by its mammoth launch.
