8 Fireplace Tiling Mistakes to Avoid for a Safer, Longer-Lasting Finish

Tiling your fireplace is a great way to update its appearance and improve the overall look of your space. However, you’ll want to prepare for this project accordingly, as a few common fireplace tiling mistakes could lead to costly repairs in the future. Some errors can lead to premature tile failure, pose safety risks, and even necessitate last-minute repairs when it's time to sell your house.

To avoid these unnecessary issues, we've listed eight common fireplace tiling mistakes and explained how to avoid them, ensuring your fireplace tile looks professionally-done and lasts for years.

1. Choosing the Wrong Tiles

Until now, you might not have been aware that there is a type of tile specifically designed for fireplaces. When tiling a fireplace, choose a tile material with high heat resistance. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are both suitable, with porcelain offering a slight edge due to its better heat resistance.

2. Using the Wrong Adhesive

Choosing a tile adhesive without heat resistance can lead to failure when the fireplace is in use. Start by narrowing down your options to those that work with the tile you’re using, and then check each product for heat resistance before making a purchase.

3. Choosing the Wrong Grout or Caulk

Before starting your project, always opt for heat-resistant tile grout and caulk for use on fireplace tile or anywhere near heat or an open flame.

4. Skipping Surface Preparation

The quality and longevity of a tile installation often depend on the quality and thoroughness of surface preparation. Start by ensuring the surface you plan to mount the tile on will support it. Then, take the time to smooth it and thoroughly clean it. Remove as much dust as possible to improve the bonding of the tile adhesive.

5. Reusing Compromised Backer Materials

If you’re replacing old tiles or other materials on a fireplace, don’t waste time trying to reuse compromised backer materials. If the tile backer can’t be easily cleaned off, or if it's cracked or otherwise damaged, it’s better to remove it and replace it with new backer board before installing the new tile.

6. Not Checking Building Codes

To avoid costly replacement when it comes time to sell your house, plan your tile installation in accordance with your local building codes.

Different building codes might specify which materials can be installed in and around a fireplace. Even if your local building codes permit fireplace tile installation, they could require a specific material thickness for the surround or hearth.

7. Not Dry-Fitting Tiles

One of the biggest tiling mistakes people make, whether it be on a fireplace or any other tiled surface, is failing to dry-fit the tiles before attempting to install them. Dry-fitting tile helps you buy the correct amount of tile before your installation. It can also help you narrow down the best tile pattern for your desired look.

In addition to the practical reasons for dry-fitting tiles, dry-fitting is a lot like painting a stripe of paint in your space to see how it looks before going all in and painting the entire room. Just because a tile looks great in the store doesn’t mean it will look good in your space, and it’s better to find that out before you adhere it to your fireplace.

When dry-fitting tiles, ensure you account for the tile adhesive thickness, which adds to the tile's height. Also, use your intended tile spacers when dry-fitting tiles to ensure accurate spacing.

8. Not Grouting Properly

You might think that failing to grout your fireplace tile correctly is simply a matter of aesthetics, but it can present a fire risk. The grout between tiles is a crucial barrier to heat from the tile backer, which is often flammable.

Ensuring you thoroughly press ample grout between each tile enhances the surface’s heat resistance and blocks heat from the vulnerable backer materials.
