Forget GTA 6's life of crime, a bizarre and brilliant indie heist game is yours for free on the Epic Games Store this week

Why wait for GTA 6 to get your heisting fix? Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is free right now thanks to the Epic Games Store, and I'm going to give it a wholehearted recommendation. Keeping all the offbeat charm that made the original Turnip Boy so beloved, but evolving the gameplay into an action roguelike reminiscent of Enter The Gungeon, the Snoozy Kazoo shoot-'em-up has earned itself an 'overwhelmingly positive' rating on Steam, and now you can grab a copy on Epic without spending a thing.

Freebies are always good news, but sometimes the free Epic Games deliver a true best-in-class winner, and Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is the latest example. The eponymous vegetable protagonist returns after his exploits in Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, and this time he's stepping his crimes up to dangerous new heights. Joining forces with the Pickled Gang, he's got his hands on all manner of weapons and a selection of bizarre tools he found on the dark web, and is ready to plunder the vaults of the Botanical Bank.

Where the first game was a more light blend of puzzles, action, and plenty of jokes, Turnip Boy's second outing ramps up the combat elements and replayability dramatically. This is a bank heist, after all, and you're going to be blasting security, shaking down hostages, and ramming as much valuable material into your earthy pockets as possible before time runs out. Take too long and the building will fill with gas, bringing a rapid end to your exploits.

While you shouldn't expect the vast depth of Enter the Gungeon or The Binding of Isaac, it's clear that Snoozy Kazoo thought hard about how to give its sequel more reasons to keep coming back. The random elements will keep you on your toes, experimenting with various weapons and builds to tackle the numerous threats and the bank's big bads that stand in your way of the real rewards.

The indie developer has also honed its writing chops since the first game, delivering a fusion of topical parodies and more traditional goofy jokes. As an early 2024 release, the vast majority of the more timely references, from cryptocurrency to game development struggles, are just as relevant today - some even more so. Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is a game I'd be willing to recommend at any time, but it's an easy pickup when there's no charge at all.

Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is free to keep via the Epic Games Store between Thursday March 5 and Thursday March 12, 2026. You can also pick up the 'Dragonlance Pack' for free-to-play D&D battler Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms. Head here to claim your copies of both while the offer lasts.

If you never got around to playing the original Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, it's certainly worth your time as well, but Robs a Bank is a notable step up in both quality and confidence from Snoozy Kazoo. Beyond a handful of references, you shouldn't have any trouble picking up this second entry without a comprehensive knowledge of the first, so give it a try and see why it's earned such high praise from those who've already done so.
