The bonkers and unashamedly horny Atomic Heart unveils its fourth and final DLC

While I think there are many superior single-player FPS games to Atomic Heart, very few manage to surprise you and bombard you with surrealism quite like Mundfish's shooter. Sure, its suggestive robots helped catch a lot of folks' attention, but it's become a successful hit on its own merit too, thanks to its wacky premise and alt-history Soviet aesthetics. So successful, in fact, Mundfish has got a sequel and an MMO-shooter spinoff called The Cube on the way. However, before they arrive, the last pages of Atomic Heart's story need to be turned, and its fourth and final DLC will do just that in April.

Titled Blood on Crystal, the new Atomic Heart DLC will see protagonist P-3, the Twins, and his merry band of comrades attempt to finally topple sentient AI big bad Charles. While its trailer shows plenty of chaos, on a first glance, this seems a bit more gritty and serious than some of its past DLC expansions, which have taken players underwater and within the trippy Limbo realm. Blood on Crystal, however, is all about carving a path to get to Charles, and fighting off a new legion of enemies called Polymorphs - the product of Charles' most "horrific experiments."

Mundfish promises this DLC will feature "the most insane bosses you can encounter at Facility 3826," which could be interpreted as just all-new boss enemies or potentially some returning or adapted ones from the base game too.

It'll be interesting to see just how tightly the book is closed on Atomic Heart with the conclusion of Blood on Crystal. Mundfish has previously said that Atomic Heart 2 will be set a few years after all the first game's events and will once again focus on stopping rogue robots wiping out humanity. It'll also still feature P-3 as the main protagonist, and the Twins are, unsurprisingly, returning as well.

However, it does appear that we'll be moving away from Facility 3826 and potentially from this version of the USSR altogether. "The events that are happening in the world of Atomic Heart are not just impacting the Soviet Union; they're impacting the rest of the globe. This is what we're going to explore," Mundfish CEO and Atomic Heart game director Robert Bagratuni told us last year.

We'll find out just how Atomic Heart wraps up in Blood on Crystal when it releases on Thursday, April 16. An Ultimate Edition of the game that contains all four post-launch expansions has also been announced by Mundfish, in case you're a bit late to the Atomic Heart train. That'll be dropping digitally at the same time as Blood on Crystal.
