There have been a lot of amazing progressive rock artists since the style began in the late 1960s. From the pioneering brilliance of King Crimson and Yes and the late 20th century neo-prog revitalizations of Marillion and The Flower Kings, to the newer wonders of Moron Police, Tiger Moth Tales and Jolly, there are literally hundreds of superb artists who’ve helped keep it alive.

As such – and in an effort to continuously reinvent how we share our love of prog rock – we’re taking a page from our list of the best rock band for each latter of the alphabet by applying the same framework to our favorite rock subgenre.

As you can imagine, deciding which 26 artists to highlight here was extremely tough, especially since – almost paradoxically – certain letters (such as “G,” “M” and “R”) have too many to choose from and others (such as “Q,” “X” and “Z”) have too few.

That’s why we’re sweetening the deal by not only explaining our choices but also suggesting a handful of other dazzling acts within each entry. You might even find that you prefer one or two of those secondary suggestions to our primary ones and, honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lastly, there may be a few bands missing entirely because we felt that they skirt the line between progressive rock and progressive metal too much. So, in the interest of eventually praising them as well, we’ve decided to place them within the latter category and save them for a future list (hint hint).
