Don’t Sell These 6 Family Heirlooms—Experts Share Creative Ways to Give Them New Life

Inheriting boxes—or even houses—full of family heirlooms can feel like a clutter-inducing burden. After all, who truly uses family heirlooms anyway? They usually end up in the attic or on a "look-but-don't-touch" display, leaving a collection of one-loved items without sentiment. But even as clutter-free homes rise, these items don't have to fall victim to the Great Clutter Purge.

“In a time when homes are becoming more minimal and clutter-free, heirlooms offer soul,” says Lauren Carlucci, interior designer and the founder of Lauren Carlucci Studio. Using vintage items adds character and heart to your home, but it can be hard to overcome the fear of ruining valuable, sentimental objects.

“When objects are used, they settle into a home,” says Steven Rodel, creative director at Guy Goodfellow. “There is something deeply human and personal about using beautiful things in everyday rituals. It creates continuity between generations, and that brings a realness to a space.” Here are six heirlooms you should keep out of the donation or resale box, along with thoughtful ways to give them new life in your home.

  • Lauren Carlucci is a British-American interior designer and the founder of Lauren Carlucci Studio.
  • Steven Rodel is the creative director at the London-based interior design studio, Guy Goodfellow.
  • Amanda Knorr is an antique dealer and the founder of Knosen Antiques.
  • Francesca del Balzo is the co-founder and creative director of PORTA, a tableware and home furnishings brand.
  • Palmer Prescott is the chief operating officer at Ruby Lane, Inc., an online marketplace for antiques and vintage items.

1. Tables, Armoires, and Dressers

Keeping heirloom furniture in your home allows the space to evolve and stay meaningful to you. “The goal is a home that feels collected and evolved, not curated for effect,” Rodel says. “It gives your interior an authenticity.”

To keep the furniture usable and relevant, Rodel recommends repurposing, revitalizing, or making your heirloom a focal point. Repurpose dressers and armoires to make bathroom vanities and cabinets. Add a lacquer or high-gloss finish to update a classic piece or help it blend in with the rest of your furniture. "The key is not preservation, but allowing a continuation to their story,” Rodel says.

2. Handmade Pieces

“Some of the most meaningful heirlooms are easy to overlook,” Carlucci says. “These pieces might not feel traditionally 'valuable,' but they often hold the strongest emotional meaning.” These items include old letters, sketchbooks, textiles, embroidery, recipe cards, and other homemade objects.

Keeping your grandfather's old hobbies might seem like keeping clutter, but Rodel says, "These often have the strongest emotional charge and can be incorporated in subtle, beautiful ways."

With slight updates—like a thoughtful display, reframing, or gentle restoration—these items can beautifully integrate into modern homes. Frame a collection of handwritten notes or sketches and hang them in a guest bedroom. Laminate recipe cards and keep them on your counter in the card box you found them in—and best of all, use them when dinnertime arrives.

3. Fine China

China and dishware are among the most common heirlooms passed down through families, and they're often displayed in a hutch, likely gathering dust. If that's the path you want to stick with, Amanda Knorr, antique dealer and founder of Knosen Antiques, recommends displaying fun modern plates alongside vintage ones, giving the set a "collected-over-time" look.

“For the more decorative plates and pieces, view them as works of art and put them on display,” Knorr says. You don’t need to display them in the kitchen either; set up a display in bathrooms, bedrooms, or even in your home office. Use the plates like you would a painting: hang them on the wall and create a beautiful collage.

Don't be afraid to use the dishware if it's still food-safe. This practice might be daunting as your mind runs through all the ways someone could scratch, chip, or break the precious items, but that's half the importance. Bringing out the plates allows new memories to be made with them, giving the heirlooms significance to another generation. Serve a casual meal on inherited china, or bring it out for an elegant birthday breakfast or tea party.

Even if you aren't using the china regularly, take them out of the cabinet to clean them properly every once in a while. Use nonabrasive cleaners and allow them to dry completely before returning them to display. Research what's dishwasher safe and what isn't. You might be surprised how easy it is to clean some of those plates.

4. Small Trinkets and Religious Heirlooms

Small treasures and decorative trinkets are often overlooked because they feel like clutter, but keeping a few of them around can give your home a unique authenticity. When you find old mirrors or frames, a porcelain pillbox, a menorah, Christmas tree ornaments, or other ceremonial pieces, think twice before tossing them in the donate box.

“These objects often hold stories about how a family lived, gathered, and celebrated,” Carlucci says. “Once they’re gone, that connection to the past can’t be recreated, and it’s something many people later regret parting with.”

Believe it or not, there are ways to give tchotchkes new life in your home. An antique wine taster can hold paperclips on a desk or serve as a ring dish. Use a porcelain pillbox as a tiny treasure chest so the tooth fairy knows exactly where to look.

“These are the kinds of things we sometimes decide don’t age well or no longer serve a purpose, especially as we decorate for more modern times,” says Francesca del Balzo, co-founder and creative director of PORTA. “Yet they are often the pieces we return to. They bring a sense of individuality and history to our homes and lives.”

5. Authentic Silver

Bring out the silver when you set the table with your great-grandmother's china set. Silverware—like dishware—is made to be used, so use it. If it's been a while since the silver has seen the sun, give it a good clean before laying it out for family dinner.

For other silver items, you can adjust their use to fit your space. Use that old silver milk jug as a bud vase in the bathroom, or use a silver tea tray to complete your drink cart.

“Keep it in pristine condition, and replace pieces as needed to keep the set complete and ready to pass down,” says Palmer Prescott, chief operating officer at Ruby Lane, Inc. Make sure to use high-quality silver polish to avoid damaging it and have fine scratches removed, but be sure not to over-polish it.

6. Fine Jewelry

“Family rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, and watches are pieces that hold sentimental as well as monetary value,” Prescott says. Although there might be a few genuine diamond pieces you want to keep safe, allowing family members to pick out a few to keep will enhance the jewelry's sentimental value.

“Add a complementary piece to the heirloom. Matching earrings of the same era and design to a necklace, for example,” Prescott says. “Let the heirloom tell a story, and build on that story if possible.” Wear heirloom jewelry regularly instead of keeping it for a special occasion. Add a vintage ring to your current stack, or gift your teenager your grandmother's necklace to wear to prom.

Find a specialist for your vintage jewelry and have them clean and maintain it annually. Make sure the prongs, clasps, and mountings are in perfect condition so you don't lose a precious gem or pendant to the office stairwell.
