Starcraft style RTS Stormgate finally adds its most-requested feature

It has been a long time coming, but the RTS Stormgate will soon add its most-requested feature: the titular gates themselves. Stormgate's most obvious inspiration is Starcraft 2, but it also takes cues from the innumerable MOBAs that have been released since DOTA. Stormgates are one such innovation, hot spots on the map that players must fight over to gain strategic advantages.

But how do Stormgates actually work? Well, they are big portals that open up at specific points on the map. Whichever player deals the most damage to the Stormgate gets to control it. The victorious army gets access to a selection of randomized rewards. These vary from powerful units that only the Stormgate will provide to a one-time cloning ability to a storm that damages everything in its path. Each Stormgate that opens over the length of a match grants better goodies. Right now, Stormgates are available only in the 1v1 mode, but they will be making their way across each of the modes eventually.

However, that's not all this upcoming update will bring. It will also cut one of the game's most reviled features: creep camps. Players have reportedly long been telling developer Frost Giant Studios that creep camps, where computer-controlled enemies guarded powerful items, were too risky to pursue. So, they have been completely removed from the game's three ladder maps (they'll still show up in custom games, for now). The best RTS games have to be lean as well as expansive, and Stormgate seems to follow in that pedigree.
