From the outside, Tempest Rising looks like a straightforward homage to Command and Conquer; the RTS equivalent of a boomer shooter. But Slipgate Ironworks has built a strategy game that goes beyond its influences - veteran fans of Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert can take heart from the Frank Klepacki soundtrack and clear nods to the GDI and Brotherhood of Nod, but Tempest Rising more than shines on its own terms. The campaign is fantastic. The visual style and unit mix are both great. Only the multiplayer has drawn any real criticism, owing to some restrictions on queuing and game modes. But now, there's a new Tempest Rising update which addresses even those concerns.

My own Tempest Rising review goes into much greater detail, but in short, this is an RTS game that - when it's at its best - transcends even Command and Conquer itself. The new Tempest Rising update, Rally and Recon, addresses some of the most common player complaints. First up, when playing online, it's now possible to join a queue with your friends, making it easier to get into matches together. There's also a spectator mode now and you can use chat while on the main menu.

Most prominently, there are six new Tempest Rising multiplayer maps. Four of these are configured for 2v2 battles and two are designed for direct, one-on-one duels. Oh, and that's the other thing - 2v2 ranked play is now fully available. The Tempest Rising Rally and Recon update is free for all players, but if you haven't played it at all yet, the strategy game is now available at a lower price than ever. Both the standard and deluxe editions of Tempest Rising are 20% off until Thursday July 10. You can get the game here.
