Dark fantasy action RPG Lost in Random was one of my favorite surprises in recent years. Drawing inspiration from Brothers Grimm's dark fairy tales, the work of Tim Burton, and the classic Oddworld games, indie developer Zoink created a striking and inventive tale in a world where all fates are determined by the roll of dice. Four years on, the studio is now part of Thunderful, and it's just launched a roguelike sequel called Lost in Random: The Eternal Die. Boasting Hades' style combat, it's out now on Steam, and you can try a free demo today.

While the original game was published under the indie-focused EA Originals program, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die comes from Thunderful itself, and is developed by Stormteller Games. It adapts the distinctive, dice-driven world of the original into a more pure action-led offering inspired by the best roguelikes, with a perspective and flow that will feel familiar if you enjoy games like Hades. Stepping into the role of Queen Aleksandra and joined by her companion die, Fortune, you'll be dashing and slashing your way through hordes of twisted, fantastical foes.

The Queen brings four distinct weapons to battle, each with their own upgrade paths. Carrying over some of the core elements of the first game, you'll supplement your skills from a list of 15 card-based abilities to create each build. Of course, it wouldn't be Lost in Random without dice rolls, and The Eternal Die is no different in this respect. Aleksandra can throw Fortune, which deals damage where it lands based on the face it rolls.

On top of this comes more than 100 elemental relics, which are placed onto a board to further amplify your output. These can affect your attacks and skills, or they can create additional effects with each toss of Fortune. Roll all of these elements together and you can end up with something rather potent - and with four biomes, each with their own ruthless boss battle, and more than 30 other enemies, you'll certainly have your hands full.

Between runs, you'll return to the Sanctuary, where you can unlock additional tools and upgrades, chat with allies, and take on quests for your next outing. The events of The Eternal Die take place immediately after the base game's story, but Thunderful says you should have no trouble following along if you're new to the series. I'd certainly recommend the first, but I'm already eager to jump into this successor; it's looking like a smart twist that successfully maintains the flavor of the world.

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is out now on Steam and the Xbox app. A 10% discount is available until Thursday June 26, so expect to pay $22.49 / £17.99. It's also included as part of the Xbox library for PC Game Pass subscribers. If you want to try it before you buy, there's a demo you can download for free.
