Dynasty Warriors Origins is currently on sale as part of a dedicated Koei Tecmo sale over at Humble Bundle. These over-the-top 1 vs 1000 combat style games not only deliver addictive action-packed gameplay, but are based on ancient Chinese history and legend, giving them a delightful educational angle too. January's Dynasty Warriors Origins is in the mix, with a juicy 23% discount, and lots of the other games in the series are up to 66% off too.

Most people who have played Dynasty Warriors: Origins will tell you that this game is one of the best hack-and-slash games, in part thanks to the way that it balances mindless violence with a reasonable dollop of strategy. It takes elements from RPG games, focusing on a storyline that features a rich lineup of historic figures from the Han Dynasty, influenced by their appearance in the 14th-century novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. While that's true of every Dynasty Warriors game, this game decides to focus on a more detailed retelling of the earlier parts of the book, specifically, the events that led to the battle of Chibi. This offers a deeper dive into events like the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the rise of Dong Zhu than we've seen in the series previously.

Unlike older Dynasty Warriors games, you play as a nameless protagonist. This refreshing take provides a greater focus on the historical officers you get to forge relationships with. This is useful because halfway through the campaign, you need to align with one of China's three rising factions. This decision shapes the rest of your story, offering a different cast of characters depending on who you pledge your allegiance to. This also triples playability as there are essentially three separate storylines.

You can expect the usual game mechanics that come with the Dynasty Warrior games, but Origins takes combat up to 11. Not only can you offer real-time commands to your troops during battle, but there are new battle mechanics born out of battle arts, which allow you to customize your character's moveset. You have to think ahead and be prepared for the tide of battle to change at the drop of a hat. If something is too hard, then it's probably worth mixing up the battle arts.
