Wartorn is a gorgeous, dark fantasy RPG from ex Bioshock devs, and it's out now

When you imagine what kind of game a new studio formed by former members of the teams behind Bioshock and Borderlands might make, you probably envision a science fiction FPS in the vein of The Outer Worlds 2 or Atomic Heart 2. Surprisingly, though, the debut from Stray Kite Studios, a company that includes veterans of the above games, is something else entirely: a roguelike fantasy tactics RPG that draws as much from Diablo 4 as it does Baldur's Gate 3 and XCOM 2. Now, you can see exactly what that game, Wartorn, plays like for yourself, as it's just launched in Early Access on Steam.

Taking place in a fantasy world devastated by an ongoing war, Wartorn is an RPG game that casts players as sisters attempting to navigate overwhelming dangers on a long caravan journey to the safety of an old family fortress. Naturally, this odyssey involves a lot of fighting. In Wartorn, these fights take the form of real-time battles with a squad of recruitable monsters, each with its own abilities and traits.

The combat requires the use of both unit positioning and the elements themselves to manipulate the battlefield, units electrifying wet enemies in one instance or using tar to heighten fires into deadly flames in another. Together with its roguelike design, which sees players maintaining certain attributes from run to run, Wartorn looks like a unique take on the fantasy RPG genre.

Wartorn is out now in Early Access on Steam, with a 33% launch offer that brings its price down to $20.09 USD / £16.74 until Tuesday June 24. Grab a copy right here.
