OLD FASHIONED BUTTERSCOTCH PIE

This homemade butterscotch pie is one your Grandmother may have made! It’s delicious.

Old Fashioned Butterscotch Pie

If you love these delicious old-fashioned pies, then you need to add this Sweet Chocolate Pie to your recipe box. It has incredible reviews and it’s a classic for a reason.

❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

If you like butterscotch, this pie will become one of your favorites.  This is an old-fashioned recipe that has been in my collection for a long time.  I can remember my mother making this creamy butterscotch pie. This pie is 100% made from scratch, and we love spending that time in the kitchen. There is something nostalgic about making a pie from scratch; however, if you don’t want to make the pie crust just use a store bought one.

⭐TIP

When the directions say “stir continuously,” that means never walking away and always stirring. If you don’t do this it will stick and it will burn. When it says stir until it thickens that is exactly what it means. If you read some of the comments on this recipe, someone says ‘it did not set up’. That is because you didn’t follow the directions.

We also let the pie cool before adding the meringue. We also store this pie in the refrigerator.

Course Dessert, Pie

Cuisine American

  • 1 9 inch pie shell, baked
  • 1 12 ounce can evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 egg yolks (Keep whites for meringue)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons margarine or butter

Meringue

  • 3 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Bake crust and let cool. In a pot on top of the stove mix milk, sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, vanilla and salt with a whisk. Add butter in one piece. Cook on medium high heat for 5 to 7 minutes until butter melts and mixture thickens. Stir constantly because this will burn easily. Once thickened, remove from heat and pour into the pie crust. Let pie cool befor adding meringue.

Meringue Directions

  • Start beating egg whites, adding sugar while beating. Add vanilla and continue until peaks are formed. Spread on pie covering entire pie. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven until brown on top or place under broiler to brown.

We let the pie cool completely before we store it in the refrigerator.
