Best drones for beginners in 2025 (UK)

This content originally appeared on Mashable for a US audience and has been adapted for the UK audience.

Whatever activity you try your hand at, you always start off as, well... a beginner. Hey, even the likes of Lionel Messi or Simone Biles were newbies once upon a time. And who knows? Maybe you’ll reach the heights of an elite droning competition one day.

For now, it’s all about learning the ropes — or rotor blades in the case of drones. To help you get started, we’ve looked for the best, most capable drones available.

Picking a drone isn't as easy as it sounds. There's more to this droning lark than just pressing takeoff. There are different types of drone-based activities plus regulations (not to mention — yawn — administrative costs) to know about before getting your frequent drone flyer miles. That applies whether you’re interested in drone photography or racing or mastering the art of the 360° roll. Here's everything you need to know, along with a roundup of select drones for beginners.

What is a drone?

It seems simple but it’s worth reiterating. In basic terms, drones are remote-controlled aerial vehicles. They can be controlled and utilised in a variety of ways — not to mention flown at various distances and heights, depending on how advanced they are. You’ve probably heard a lot about drones in recent years. Drones sometimes make headlines thanks to their use in military and aerospace technologies.

Are there different types of drones?

In terms of the kind of drones listed here — i.e. drones used for leisure activities — the most popular type is the multi-rotor drone. They’re often small and lightweight and have four rotors (sometimes called quadcopters). Some of the drones on the list are also “mini” — palm sized flyers that are easily portable, but still come equipped with decent camera equipment and other features.

What is drone photography?

The most common use for drones is photography. In basic terms, you can fly a drone and capture aerial footage, but photography features and functionality go way beyond simple birds-eye-view shots. Drones are used by filmmakers and professional photographers, and they offer all kinds of shooting modes that can track, follow, and spiral around your photography subject. This is usually controlled in a smart device app. Some drones also have advanced cameras that are capable of recording and transmitting 4K quality footage. Depending on the drone, they may be able to transmit this footage in real time or even post straight to social media. But you don't have to be a pro to use a camera drone. They're also great for fun snaps and general use.

What is an FPV drone?

FVP drones ("first person view") allow you to control your drone by beaming a real-time video to your device or a pair of VR-like googles. In other words, it puts you in the pilot’s seat. FPV drones are usually used for drone racing, a popular trend among drone hobbyists, so they tend to be built for speed and agility. Also look out for "tiny whoop" drones — micro-sized FPV racers.

What flight features to drones have?

There are all kinds of flight features to know about. Some drones (depending on how advanced they are) will allow you to map a predetermined route and fly using GPS, for instance. Common features include one-button takeoff and altitude hold, which means the drone can hover in the same spot mid-air. There's also headless mode, which allows your drone to fly in any direction, and 360° flips at the push of a button. Most decent drones will have return to home (RTH) technology, which means the drone will automatically fly back to you when you're finished flying or the battery is low. Hi-spec drones may also have obstacle avoidance sensors to prevent collisions.

How far does a drone fly?

Most beginner-level drones fly from a range of anything between 80 and 500 metres. Some models, however, will fly out several kilometres. It all depends on the kind of tech you want and how much you’re willing to spend.

How do you register your drone?

It may come as a surprise but if your drone weighs over 250 grams, you have to register it with the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) for a small fee. Piloting an unregistered drone is against the law. Go to CAA.co.uk for all the rules and regulations and CAA Consultations for drone registration. Once you've done that, you can start thinking about which device you actually want.

What is the best drone for beginners?

We've put in the air miles and landed on the very best models. There's something for every type of budding drone pilot on this list. Just read on and pick a favourite.

These are the best drones for beginners in 2025.

DJI Neo camera drone

The Good & The Bad

  • Affordable price
  • Palm takeoff
  • Very simple to fly
  • RTH technology
  • 4K photography
  • Robust video features
  • No object avoidance
  • Shorter flying time

If you want to get started with the best name in consumer drones, try the DJI Neo. It's the most affordable DJI drone available and will give you some leeway to get the hang of it before investing in a more expensive DJI model.

First of all, it's easy enough to master this drone in the air. It's small and takes off from the palm of your hand. You can pilot it by using the controller or via the DJI app on your smartphone. It has voice control too, so just tell it to take off, or you can pair it with the DGI Goggles 3 for FPV flying. It also has an automatic return to home function for safely navigating its way back to you.

You get smooth 4K video and there are a number of video features to play around with, including subject tracking and a range of QuickShot modes. It's a great intro to drone photography. There's no option for a memory card but you can use QuickTransfer to send videos and images to your phone.

The main drawback is a lack of obstacle avoidance, so it's best to fly this one in clear and open spaces. Either that or sharpen your piloting skills pronto.

Holy Stone HS210 drone

The Good & The Bad

  • Lots of fun to fly
  • Very affordable
  • Flips & flying features
  • Fairly durable
  • Parts are a bit fiddly
  • Short battery life
  • No camera

Why We Like It

If the kids are bugging you for a drone, check out the Holy Stone HS210. And why not?  Drones can be used for racing, photography, and filmmaking. But let’s not forget good old-fashioned fun. And this one certainly is that — an affordable drone toy with stacks of great reviews.

With an overall flight time of 21 minutes, its features include altitude hold to hover in the same spot and headless mode for flying in all directions. There’s also a 3D flip. Just press the button to flip it mid-air. And it’s robust enough to handle the odd crash (all part of the fun) and it boasts decent speeds.

The batteries only pack 7 minutes each, but this bundle comes with three batteries — as well as spare propellors — so you can quickly swap them around to extend your flying time. The kids’ smaller fingers might come in handy with this because it can be a bit fiddly swapping bits and pieces around. Overall, it's lots of fun for little pilots and comes at a pleasingly low price.

DJI Flip drone and controller

The Good & The Bad

  • Simple, fun flying
  • Shoots 4K video at 60fps
  • Smart shooting features
  • Return to home tech
  • Cool folding design
  • Limited onboard storage
  • Basic obstacle avoidance

OK, so the near-£400 price tag of the DJI Flip doesn’t scream “beginner” but we’re recommending this model as a bit of a step-up. It’s still super easy to handle in the air. It has palm takeoff and like the DJI Neo you can control via the controller, smartphone app, voice control, or other DJI accessories.

Where this drone takes things up a notch is its longer flight time — 31 minutes vs the Neo’s comparatively paltry 13 minutes — and has front-facing obstacle avoidance and automatic braking. The obstacle avoidance does has some limitations as it’s front-facing only, and doesn’t work with certain modes.

In terms of photography, it has a selection of pro spec. It captures 4K footage at 60fps, using stabilisation tech and a three-axis gimbal for smooth and steady footage. It also has a stack of shooting modes, including Spotlight (which keeps you at the centre of the shot), Subject Tracking (to follow your chosen subject), DirectionTrack (for seamless movement and tracking), MasterShots (which maps out a path and creates instant cinematic videos), and Dronie (like a selfie but the drone pulls out to reveal the background).

EMAX Tinyhawk II Freestyle racing drone

The Good & The Bad

  • FPV goggles included
  • Built to withstand collisions
  • Solid video transmission
  • Fast, responsive flying
  • Expensive starter bundle
  • Only 480p video

Why We Like It

In the drone world, FPV racing is its very own thing, and the EMAX Tinyhawk II Freestyle is made specifically for beginner racers.

With FPV, you control via a live transmission of the drone’s point-of-view. The onboard camera beams the live POV video directly to your smartphone or goggles for a VR-like experience. The EMAX Tinyhawk II Freestyle is typical of racing drones, which are designed for speed and agility, with good video transmission for showing the action in real time.

This little dynamo can fly both indoors and outdoors, and it's optimised to maximise your flight time and in-flight control. The propellors, grip, and thrust combination will allow you to handle pretty much any situation as you fly. Indeed, this is one for really honing your flying skills. It’s also made from aerospace-grade 3K woven carbon fibre, so it can handle high-speed bumps — which is good news considering it can reach speeds up to 120 km/h.

The downsides are a relatively short flying time and lower-res video quality. And while it is good overall value — the bundle includes the goggles and spare parts — the upfront cost won’t suit everyone’s budget.

Potensic ATOM 2 drone

The Good & The Bad

  • Competitive airtime
  • Great flying features
  • AI nighttime shooting
  • Comprehensive video spec
  • Folds away neatly
  • No object avoidance
  • Better DJI drones avilable

Why We Like It

The Potensic ATOM 2 drone is a real all-rounder. It will suit anyone who wants to get started with the full package for a reasonable price (reasonable in hi-tech drone terms, at least). It comes equipped with a camera that shoots 4K HDR video and captures 8K photos, as well as GPS, FPV flying via a smartphone app, and a competitive flight time of just over half an hour.

It might seem too advanced for beginners, but it’s ideal for anyone who wants to get a feel for what drones are capable of. In fact, you may find that this model is a lifer and you don’t need to upgrade.

Something that really stands out about this drone is its excellent selection of flight features. These include one-key takeoff and landing, cruise control for steady speed over long flights, and advanced RTH that updates the home point to your current position. It’s well stacked with photography features too, including 4 x zoom, 5 x slow motion, AI-powered tracking, crisp nighttime footage, and a whole range of tricksy and professional-level shooting modes.

The Potensic ATOM 2 is a slightly more expensive option compared to some of the other models on this list, but the feature selection make it excellent value.
