After the success of Avowed, a first-person RPG set in the same universe, it is hard to know whether a third isometric Pillars of Eternity game will ever come. But if it does, one of its key architects has given us a peek of what it could look like. In a new interview with RPG designer and writer Josh Sawyer, he discusses his vision for what Pillars of Eternity 3 could be, and it sounds a lot like Baldur's Gate 3.
Pillars of Eternity is still one of the best RPG games, but it has been seven years since the franchise's last entry: the critically-acclaimed Deadfire. Sawyer has a few ideas for how to update the formula. He says, "I think that a third game should be an isometric 3D with an environment more like Baldur's Gate 3; it would work. And I think that could be really awesome. It would be easier for us to make the art and be a lot more dynamic. I've said this before, so hopefully nobody will get mad [laughs]." He also explains that he would love to work on a game that deepens the systems of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, adding more environmental elements like, "elevation hazards and dynamic terrain." These ideas would put it more in line with the flexible tactics of Baldur's Gate 3. The first Pillars of Eternity also recently got a patch adding turn-based combat.
Josh Sawyer has a long history in game development. He was the lead designer and project director for Fallout: New Vegas and a lead designer on Neverwinter Nights 2. His most recent game was the narrative adventure game Pentiment, which follows an artist in Reformation-era Bavaria. Both Pillars of Eternity games were crowd-funded and published before Xbox acquired Obsidian in November 2018. You can read the full interview from Gamepressure at this link.
