Borderlands 4 pre-orders confirm it isn't an $80 game after all

2K and Gearbox have finally opened up Borderlands 4 pre-orders, and the looter shooter isn't launching as an $80 game. Instead, you can purchase the standard edition for $70, with multiple upgrade options offering the base game and DLC for up to $130 total. With major triple-A releases like Xbox's The Outer Worlds 2 taking the leap to $80 price tags, there was an expectation that B4 could do the same. After checking the Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam storefronts, however, it doesn't look like that's happening.

Borderlands 4's $70 price comes as quite a shock for two reasons. The first is the growing trend of major publishers increasing their prices, like Nintendo with Mario Kart World. The second is Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford's comments from earlier this year where, when a fan inquired about the game's $80 price point, he said: "A) Not my call. B) If you're a real fan, you'll find a way to make it happen."

As you might expect, Pitchford's statement regarding what could be one of the best co-op games of the year didn't go down well. With the Borderlands 4 release date looming, many criticized his comments as being tone deaf. Pitchford then followed up, however, admitting that "nobody likes being taken for granted and it was not my intent."

Now that we have all the pre-order information, though, we can see that Borderlands 4's standard edition is listed as $69.99 / £59.99 on Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. If you want to spend more money, however, there are multiple editions available that come with extras.

The $99.99 / £89.99 Deluxe Edition includes the base game, the Gilded Glory Pack pre-order bonus, Firehawk's Fury Weapon Skin, and the Bounty Pack bundle. The $129.99 / £119.99 edition, meanwhile, comes with all the previous extras alongside the Ornate Order cosmetics, and the Vault Hunter Pack. The Vault Hunter Pack comes with two new playable Vault Hunters, two story packs, two new map regions, more gear and weapons, and a slate of cosmetics.
