Mindseye review scores mean it's now the worst-rated game of the year so far

Perhaps one day, we'll look back at Mindseye and remember it with a strange affection, a flawed, curious sandbox shooter that felt - albeit inadvertently - plucked from a bygone era. The hype, the bugs, the hubris of it all. Maybe, in time, we'll forget about all the large and small annoyances. Like Aliens Colonial Marines, Assassin's Creed Unity, and the launch week of Cyberpunk 2077, we will think only of how Mindseye, in its bizarre own way, briefly unified and humored the entire gaming world. But that is for the future. Right now, Mindseye reviews have afflicted it with an ignominious new title. Build A Rocket Boy's debut is the worst-rated game of 2025 so far.

Performance issues, drab visual design, and overly familiar driving and shooting sections - these are some of the chief complaints directed at Mindseye so far. Overseen by Leslie Benzies, the legendary former Rockstar producer whose credits include Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption, the sandbox game serves as an emissary for Build A Rocket Boy's greater ambitions, the Play.Mindseye and Build.Mindseye modes serving as examples for the studio's upcoming user-driven creation platform Everywhere. As of this writing, only 38% of the 1,600 Steam user reviews for Mindseye are positive. Critics are similarly unimpressed.

Metacritic displays the aggregated review scores for precisely 188 different games released in 2025 so far. At the very top, with a collected score of 93 out of 100, sits beloved RPG Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Then comes the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, followed by one of the best puzzle games of the year, Blue Prince.

Navigate to the final page of the listings however, and you will find revived pirate brawler Captain Blood, on 50 out of 100, paramedic simulation game Ambulance Life, at 44, and - beneath every single other 2025 game tracked on Metacritic - Mindseye, on 43.

That score is based on six critic reviews. Mindseye's Metacritic user score, however, is lower, at 2.5 out of 10 based on 269 responses. For its part, Build A Rocket Boy recently issued a statement explaining that it is "heartbroken" over some of the major performance issues players have encountered so far and working to implement fixes. It may be expecting too much, but if Cyberpunk, No Man's Sky, and Final Fantasy 14 can do it, perhaps - just perhaps - Mindseye can rebound.
