After a divisive launch, Elden Ring Nightreign's reception has finally improved

Elden Ring Nightreign has clawed its way up to a 'very positive' Steam rating, less than a month after it debuted to a 'mixed' reception on Valve's platform. Players have had a range of issues with Nightreign since release, like unfair solo play and a lack of a duo option, but finally appear to be coming around to the co-op RPG. Thankfully, Fromsoftware is quick to fix these issues, which seems to be helping the roguelike spinoff recover. I wouldn't be surprised if the reception continues to improve, then.

When Elden Ring Nightreign launched, it had a 67% rating on Steam. This was Fromsoftware's lowest-rated title at the time, with only Dark Souls 3's Ashes of Ariandel DLC worse off on the storefront. Players complained about a lack of communication tools and a heavy focus on three-player matches. Some people wanted to squad up in a duo, but were left disappointed by the solo or trio requirement. Others, meanwhile, were surprised by Nightreign's lack of crossplay, especially considering its online focus.

In the last couple of weeks, however, Nightreign's user score has slowly climbed, helping it find its place among the best soulslike games. As of writing, 80% of the game's Steam user reviews are now in favor of the game, netting it the 'very positive' rating. For perspective, Nightreign has a higher rating than the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, which is 71% positive from over 80,000 reviews.

There are a few reasons for this. First off, Fromsoftware has been quick to action player feedback, and has already made some changes to improve the experience. Thanks to patch 1.01.1, if you play solo, you now get one revive per nightly boss, alongside a slate of extra runes across your run. These changes make Nightreign much more manageable solo, accounting for the lack of team revives while adjusting your power level as you progress.

Fromsoftware has also promised to add a duos mode to the game, after players kept asking for it. You can already play in a team of two thanks to a Nightreign co-op mod, but now the official option is coming.
