Team Cherry's Matthew Griffin says Hollow Knight Silksong will not have "anything like" in-game purchases, after a supposed ESRB rating on the game's Xbox webpage suddenly claimed it would. Griffin also says the developer is looking into having this information changed, so it shouldn't cause confusion much longer. So no, despite what you might have seen, Silksong isn't going to have microtransactions.
The confusion began with Hollow Knight Silksong's Xbox webpage. Sometime recently, the Metroidvania's information on the site changed, giving it a 'Teen' ESRB rating, despite no rating existing on the board's website yet. The description includes the line "Users Interact, In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)," which naturally raised a lot of questions about whether or not Silksong will have microtransactions, which the first game did not.
When asked about this Xbox webpage info via X/Twitter, Griffin writes "I'll look into that, thank you." Then, another fan requests if Griffin can confirm or deny the existence of in-game purchases in Silksong altogether. "'In-Game Purchases' should not be listed there; there isn't anything like that in the game," Griffin replies.
Griffin also clarifies things further over on the Hollow Knight Discord. "That whole thing seems like it's from the wrong game. I'm looking into getting it removed/changed," they write. Then another fan comments on how the original Hollow Knight has an 'Everyone' rating, to which Griffin replies, "That's what it says on the Xbox Store. It's just that [Silksong] landing page that is the oddity I think."
With the Hollow Knight Silksong release date quickly approaching, it's good to know that this talk of in-game purchases looks like some form of mixup. This isn't the only recent Silksong clarification, either, as after Xbox's summer showcase Griffin also updated us on the game's launch window.
