Think Resident Evil's zombies and mutant monsters are terrifying? A major new update for reverse-horror game Deck of Haunts lets you summon the Grim Reaper. This eerie deckbuilder, which casts you as a haunted mansion, will let you introduce all those meddling ghost hunters to the literal embodiment of death roaming your halls. At least, you can if you prove that you're sufficiently evil.

If you've not played Deck of Haunts, you've missed out on a real treat. This is the game we've wanted ever since we stepped through the doors of Resident Evil's Spencer Mansion, a horror card game where you're the haunted house itself, inflicting all manner of miseries on those you lure through doors.

Now, Deck of Haunts has received a massive new Nightmare Update which adds, amongst other features, a new ultra-difficult Nightmare Mode and new trap cards. But by far the coolest feature is that you can summon Death, complete with robe and scythe, to slaughter your visitors. It doesn't get more metal than that.

Admittedly, that sounds like it'd make Deck of Haunts hugely unbalanced, but there are a couple of catches. Firstly, you can only unlock him in the Nightmare mode (after which you can use him in regular gameplay). Secondly, you need to acquire 13 souls, by either killing your visitors or driving them insane.

But, believe us, it's going to be worth the effort. As tenacious as they are, some making a beeline for your mansion's vulnerable heart, dispatching smug paranormal investigators never gets old.

The update, which naturally dropped on Friday the 13th, also adds a new Crypt room, new character traits, and increases your mansion's level cap from 10 to 12. It features a host of bug fixes and tweaks, which developer Mantis details in the patch notes.

Deck of Haunts' Nightmare update is live right now. The game is also currently 20% off on Steam, making it $15.99/£13.40.
