If the original Cities Skylines is still popular after ten years, it's partly because of its extensive, flexible asset editor. You can import custom assets, create bespoke intersections, and even design your own in-game models. It's a fundamental part of modding and key to the 'open' nature of CS1's development tools. Naturally, the arrival of the Cities Skylines 2 asset editor is highly anticipated. In October, it will be two years since the city-building sequel was originally released, and despite some transformative updates and patches, customization tools with equivalent depth and flexibility to those in CS1 are yet to arrive. With the Bridges and Ports DLC delayed and still in the works, the Cities Skylines 2 team now confirms that development of the assets editor is temporarily a secondary priority.

Back in March, Colossal Order explained that work on the Cities Skylines 2 asset editor was proving more technically challenging than was originally anticipated, but that its creation was "moving forward." Since then, although a recent free update introduced new bridge types and other additions, the full Bridges and Ports DLC has been indefinitely pushed back. Now, the team behind the city-building game shares a new update on the asset editor itself.

Responding to a question on the Paradox Plaza forum, a post credited to the official Cities Skylines account provides an outline of the asset editor's current status: "Unfortunately, the asset editor related work has had to be pushed to the background while we have been focusing on other priorities," it reads. "After the Bridges and Ports related work, we will have the team tackle the remaining issues, and the asset editor for buildings will be released as soon as it's ready.

"The plan is currently to support building assets (and props) and expand the supported asset types in the future. Once we have established basic support for assets in the editor, more complex asset types, such as vehicles and networks, can be worked on."

Although that may be discouraging to Cities Skylines 2 players, another post from the official Cities Skylines account confirms that, as well as the asset editor, the introduction of bicycles to CS2 will be a priority after the Bridges and Ports DLC is completed and launched. Bicycles and cycle lanes are another highly anticipated feature for Cities Skylines 2, as they help to improve in-game road networks and traffic congestion.
