Thumbtack’s 2026 Home Design Predictions Are All About Multigenerational Homes

Thumbtack and Redfin have joined forces to release their 2026 Home Design Trend Predictions. For Thumbtack, this meant surveying over 100 home and design professionals to gauge which home trends will be most popular next year. The biggest home design priority that Redfin and Thumbtack have spotted? Homes that are suitable for multigenerational living.

“With many homeowners staying put longer, we’re seeing a big wave of re-imagined spaces. ADUs (accessory dwelling units) remain extremely popular, both for family flexibility and rental potential,” said Redfin agent Kellie Martinez in the report.

Homeowners today want to make their house a home, and most importantly, a home that can meet the needs of multiple generations. Here are a few ways that Thumbtack has noticed homeowners are preparing for the future (and how you can do the same).

Smart Homes and Advanced Home Technology

Keeping a home up to date is something many homeowners think about when they find their forever home. Smart home technology doesn’t just make life easier—it can decrease your utility bills, too. Smart lights can be automated so you never forget to turn them off again, and a smart thermostat can be adjusted remotely to save money on electricity.

In a multigenerational home, smart devices make household management effortless and keep young kids safe with smart security devices and automated privacy curtains.

"Tech-integrated design is in high demand, featuring hidden charging stations, concealed outlets, discreet smart lighting, and TVs and speakers tucked inside walls or wood paneling,” said Redfin agent Tamara Mattox-Kabat in the report.

Flexible Properties Are Taking the Lead in 2026

Home remodels that add new space to an existing property are essential for a family to grow within a single house. Thumbtack highlights helpful remodels, such as finishing an existing basement to create an accessible home within a home. ADUs are another popular option for multigenerational households because of what they can be used for.

ADUs are also helpful for families looking to make a little extra income. When a member of the household isn’t using it, an ADU can be rented out, ensuring that it remains well-used no matter the needs of your family.

Changes that Make a Home Last

Home weatherproofing is essential for creating a space that remains safe for generations to come. Durable home materials, storm-resistant windows, EV-ready garages, and climate protection are non-negotiables for multigenerational homeowners. These additions aren’t just protecting your home right now—they’re also ensuring that your property stays protected as the environment changes.

When it comes to home design and home remodels, multigenerational and aging-in-place households are also considering materials that will last the longest and require the least maintenance. Thumbtack says that homeowners are ditching carpet in favor of long-lasting hardwood or stone, hoping to cut down on future maintenance.

Home additions that will always look timeless—with custom features, hidden storage, and built-ins taking the lead—are also a priority for multigenerational homeowners who want their homes to serve future generations without looking outdated.
