Want Your Career To Take The Next Step? How Scientific Conferences Can Be a Catalyst For Change
Picture it now. You are a young scientist at your first conference, and you’ve just seen a senior researcher you’ve long admired. They’re bound to have great insights for your latest project; all you have to do is say hello – it all starts there.

Everywhere around there’s a hum of conversation as researchers gather around posters, balancing coffee cups while excitedly gesturing, pointing, and debating new ideas. In the next room, a speaker has sparked debate with a new proposal, the implications of which are still rippling through the crowd. And here you are, looking to make connections that will jump-start your burgeoning career in science. While conferences have long been a constant of the scientific landscape, young or early-career researchers may not fully grasp how vital they are. Conferences afford the unique opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, to share knowledge, and expand your opportunities in ways that can have long-lasting effects on your career. Conferences come in all shapes and sizes and can offer you different benefits depending on what you’re looking for. For instance, if you have a specific area of focus that you specialize in or a challenge you’re interested in working through with peers, then focused, niche conferences may offer an experience more suited to your objectives. These are very specific events that gather specialists, researchers, and professionals working on narrower topics. They can be fantastic places to have deeper, technical discussions and to network with a more intimate group of collaborators. Larger, industry-themed conferences bring together individuals from various backgrounds and at different stages of their careers – from subject specialists to interdisciplinary researchers, students, industry representatives, educators, and policy-makers. Larger conferences can expose participants to new ideas outside their specific discipline to broaden attendees’ horizons, while also offering significant networking opportunities from across the sector. Pittcon is a great example of a large conference designed to educate and provide value for professionals across the scientific landscape. It’s the world’s largest annual conference and exposition on laboratory science. It’s been traveling to different venues across the United States for over 75 years and, in that time, it has helped generations of scientists and researchers make new connections and further their careers. In 2026, Pittcon will be heading to San Antonio, Texas for the first time and has a packed program of talks, focused groups, poster sessions, and more to offer every scientist, no matter their level or experience. Pittcon has also arranged numerous social activities during the conference week – including golf, a casino night, historical tours of the Alamo, and Fiesta Pittcon – to help all conference attendees build community with each other while unwinding after a busy day of discovery. If you’re considering attending Pittcon, or any other conference, there are a few things you should consider to get the most out of your experience. Firstly, research the show and come up with a plan; don’t just turn up and hope for the best. While this can sometimes lead to serendipitous situations, it can also make the whole event more overwhelming. Instead, make a note of speakers you’re interested in, sessions you want to attend, and build a schedule to get the best use of your time. Don’t worry about scheduling breaks for yourself either. Conferences can be tiring, so it’s important to wear comfy (though smart) clothes, eat regularly, and stay hydrated! Pittcon is unique in many ways, but what helps set it apart from other conferences is the amount of resources and time it invests in facilitating career opportunities. Pittcon is one of the only conferences that offers an Employment Bureau where attendees can take part in mock interviews with potential employers. There’s also a team of résumé reviewers available to offer advice, while some exhibitors are specifically advertising sales and research opportunities. If this sounds appealing, you could consider becoming a Pittcon volunteer. Volunteers get all the benefits of attending the conference, as well as experience behind the scenes (all for a reduced cost). “How can people be involved in the future?” Heather Juzwa, Pittcon 2025 President, said to IFLScience. “We have two scientific organizations back in Pittsburgh that own Pittcon: The Society for Analytical Chemistry, and the Spectroscopy Society. And when you are an active volunteer with those two societies, then you can be selected to be part of the Pittcon organization committee. And eventually, you do well as a volunteer, and you can move up to the presidency. And I promise it is one of the most rewarding things that you can do.” If volunteering isn’t for you, then how about applying to present your research at Pittcon in the future? It can be an excellent way to share your work and gain experience as a speaker, as well as a chance to discuss any challenges or problems you may have with a diverse group of people. Who knows? The answer to your problems really could be a “hello” away. Pittcon will take place in San Antonio, Texas, between March 7-11, 2026. Registration is now open. Don’t miss out on this great chance to enhance your career. This article is an advert and includes sponsored material. Read our transparency policy for more information.
